Unmasked the Gnome 2.26 ebuild etc from the overlay and emerged it. Upon restart however, I get nothing but the background color, a mouse cursor and nothing more. This is what .xsession-errors has to say about it:

Code:

There is plenty of the "Couldn't recognize the image file format for file 'somethingsomething.png'" when trying to start applications like porthole etc.

Any clue what is missing!?

ah that are "good" news! I have this problem since 6 bloody weeks and nobody was able to help me! But I get this after I setup gentoo on my new machine, on my old 2.26 runs without problems (except dekbar-applet)! In the meantime i thought i'm the reason.

@cre: if you want to use your dektop" do this:

remove xdm from rc
start as your user 'starx'.
click in the black and select "exit"
now type 'gnome-wm | nautilus | dbus-launch --exit-with-session gnome-session | gnome-panel &'

now you will be "able" to work with your system. Or you login as root, because he will have no problems!

can you please post "emerge --info" ?!

Ah, unfortunately I had to work (this week, again) so I downgraded to 2.24 to be able to run everything smoothly. I don't think I'll attempt an upgrade again unless someone might know what I did wrong...

Yes thats true, I have to work to but if everybody runs away nobody will know when the bug is fixed. ;-)
I have now a temporary ubuntu installed on my home partition.

I will keep looking for the bug, but I'm not that professional guy which I should be to do this in no time. :?

If your problem is the same one I encountered then the following steps should provide a solution, although it appears this advice is a little late coming...

Code:
/etc/init.d/xdm stop
echo "XDG_DATA_DIRS=\"/usr/share:/usr/share/gdm\"" >> /etc/env.d/99xdg-local
env-update
/etc/init.d/xdm start

The cause of the issue lies with the XDG_DATA_DIRS environment variable. The paths defined in this variable are the "base directories relative to which data files should be searched" by (in this instance) gnome-session in order to locate the .desktop files of required component providers; note the output of your .xsession-errors file.

When I recently completed a new installation this variable contained a single path to /usr/share/gdm/ as specified by 99xdg-gdm in /etc/env.d/ but the aforementioned files (metacity.desktop etc) reside in the application directory of /usr/share/.

According to Gilles Dartiguelongue I think we should use (unmask) xdg-utils-1.0.2-r3 instead. I test this and it works well.
So a "/etc/env.d/99xdg-local" is not necessary. I just want mentioned that fact in this thread.

You're quite right, the xdg-utils-1.0.2-r3 ebuild effectively does what I recommended. Thanks for pointing that out.

The above fix didn't work for me. Most of my icons work, but gnome-power-manager is just a black page box, it doesn't show me battery levels or anything... just blank :(

Using gnome-power-manager 2.24.4 (and this happened since the latest -uDN world)

Half update to 2.26, some stayed at 2.24

xdg-utils-1.0.2-r3 did the trick for me as well, thanks Jimeh and McNerl!

PaulW21781: How come you're running half 2.24/half 2.26? How did you unmask it? I am running power-manager 2.26.1, works fine (for me).
