I was just wondering why does it seem like people are completely rebuilding their system after a major GCC update. I read a couple posts on the GCC4.4 that several people re compiled their entire system (is it just a emerge world Duve ? or is it a emerge system -e? I don't know). Anyway is it a must (or recommended to?) to rebuild your system after a GCC update? I know its possible to change between versions but I don't understand why you may want to rebuild your system. I don't think in my years of running Gentoo that I have ever rebuild a system (except on a reinstall).

Hi, each time that you have a big release, it's recommended that you run this :

Code:

# emerge -e @system @world

Also, on my current box I was running -march=nocona and now I'm running with -march=native

It's because of the toolchain that you need to do that. And if you don't, then one day something will not compile because of this.

Another good reason is: "if i'm on IRC all day doing nothing, why wouldn't I want to watch shit scroll by for hours?" :)

BTW: They've even taken away "watching shit scroll by" with portage-2.2 and --jobs :D
