Does anyone know how to change the background image of Grub2 or even use another theme. Searching the net only comes up with results from Debian or Ubuntu and aren't a great help in this case. Switching to Debian or Ubuntu is not an option though.

It's done the same way. I make new images once in a while using Gimp and put in place in the /boot/grub/ folder.
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-243828.html

After making your image put the entry of which one you want to use in /boot/grub/grub.conf like this:

Quote:
default 0
timeout 20
#splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/homer_brain.xpm.gz
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/Butterfly.xpm.gz

Yes, I know, that's related to grub-legacy - the grub we all use and like for its reliability but I'm talking about Grub2 or in Portage grub-1.96.

Well on my 1024x600 screen the only way to set a background image in Grub2 is with 915resolution as described here:https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-728450-highlight-grub2.html .

So I guess that to change the image you just have to set another background image. The reason why it didn't work for me was that after following the guide completely I was unable to get a fbsplash working. So I disabled 915resolution which then garbled my grub2 splash image. What I did now was to follow the guide only to a certain degree (and without having 915resolution in the runlevel) and sticked to uvesafb. Then I went back to 915resolution to get my grubsplash working again.

Others, without these 1024x600 screens should be able to just set the background image without this 915resolution stuff but I'm not sure about that and I can't test it somewhere.

Now I'm interested in this theming thing.

BTW, don't run grub-update. It will ruin your precious grub.cfg and you'll get a bootloader screen full of bullshit (single user, safe etc.) and your other non linux OS (for instance Windows) will probably not appear.

Ya, thanks for pointing out the grub version cause as you suspected I don't have that one.
