Hi, folks!
As I'm working in a company, that uses Domino/Notes to agregate information, I need Notes running on my Gentoo box. Now I have VMWare with Windows and Notes client inside, but it sucks! I have Lotus Notes 8.0.1 for Linux (tar archive) and Lotus Notes 8.5 for Linux as rpm. I faild to setup 8.0.1 from tar and now have no clue how to deal with rpm. I've got rpm engine installed, and now trying to setup Notes with
Code:

# rpm -ihv ibm_lotus_notes-8.5.i586.rpm

..but I have strange error:

Code:

warning: ibm_lotus_notes-8.5.i586.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 34f9ae75
error: Failed dependencies:
        /bin/sh is needed by ibm_lotus_notes-8.5-20081211.1925.i586
        /opt/ibm/lotus is needed by ibm_lotus_notes-8.5-20081211.1925.i586

Here is my system information:

I'm running 8.0.2 on x86. Did not have an install problem that I remember. Did not install Sametime as I prefer Pidgin. Still have not gotten it so that if I click on a link in an email it goes to firefox.

It is rare that I use more than the email part of Notes though, so your mileage may vary.

Could be - haven't tried it. I know the Client Access drivers (we need for ODBC to iSeries boxes) originally weren't even available for 64-bit. They are now though.

There is no way to get Notes working on x86_64 but making 32-bit chroot?

I'm running i586 gentoo and have no problems with ibm_lotus_notes_8.5.0.
I've had exactly the same problem installing it, but don't wory, just try installing with options:
Code:

rpm -ihv ibm_lotus_notes-8.5.i586.rpm --nodeps

Then just run it:
Code:

/opt/ibm/lotus/notes/notes

I have a friend who has Notes 8.5 running on x86_64, and he insists that a 32-bit chroot is the easy way.

I had a jolly time getting Notes 8.0.1 running on 32-bit Gentoo, and was able to brute-force my way to operation with a lot of "ldd" and logreading. That was some time ago, and I haven't had the stomach to try Notes 8.5.

But do you have problems installing or running LotusNotes? If your only problem was with this strange error when installing LotusNotes, please use:
Code:

rpm -hiv XXX --nodeps

It will just ignore all the false dependencies about /bin/sh etc. For me all databases work perferct.
My friend was working on x86_64 gentoo with LotusNotes, and I don't think he used chroot to 32-bit.

Which log? Make sure you look in "${HOME}/workplace-tmp", one particular file in that directory might be "iwp-log-notes-${user}.txt". I've also found some log drippings in "${HOME}/lotus/notes/data". I wouldn't count on much in "/var/log" for this.

Do the directories exist? The directories are created early, during user-level first-time startup. If you don't have the directories, you're failing really, really early.
Are you trying to start Notes from a command line, or from a desktop icon?

At the very least, you should be trying to start Notes from a command line to see what comes out on stdout/stderr.

Gentoo isn't RPM compatible. You'll need to use something like rpm2tarbz to turn it into a tarball, unpack it somewhere, and try to fix up the dependencies yourself.

There is an rpm ebuild for Gentoo, and it adds the "rpm" command. I've seen it used to install packages, though I really hate the idea.

In /opt/ibm/lotus/notes/framework/rcp_install.log you should find some logs about instalation. Maybe examine it to find out if the lotus_notes instaled properly.

Notes-8.02 was a major PITA to install. Did not happen until I found a Suse Box. There the installer worked like a charm.

When it comes to InstallShield from Macromedia "Supporting xx and yy" means "It will not run on any other platform".

This problem is caused by Notes not liking the newer version of gtk2 (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/427949).

I fixed it on my Gentoo system by copying the old versions of the libraries here: http://www.freetechie.com/upload/lotus_notes/, into /opt/ibm/lotus/notes.

Sorry, it must be a different problem then...

If it helps, I'm using the following version: ibm_lotus_notes-8.5.1_beta20090709.i586.rpm

8.5.3 works hefre using the 4 .so libs from https://usablesoftware.wordpress.com/2010/03/09/installing-lotus-notes-8-5-1-fp1-on-ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx-64bit/ and using the ebuild from here : http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Lotus_Notes

Looking quickly at my Gentoo install, 2 of the for .so libs are already installed and essentially at the same version levels as those at your Lucid link. As for the other 2, I don't know how to get "libgdk-pixbuf" in Gentoo. I've found "gdk-pixbuf", but it installs "/usr/lib64/gdk-pixbuf*", not /usr/lib64/libgdk-pixbuf*".

I'm currently able to skirt needing Notes under Gentoo, but it would be nice to have.

Well - I do have those libs too, but at _current_ software level, and Notes requires a specific older minor version of gdk lib instead.
