Hi,

Could you guys show me, please, how yours grub.cfg looks like? I'm trying to boot with very basic configuration but every time I finish with grubs rescue mode.
Grub version: grub-1.96, installed by grub-install /dev/sda
My grub.cfg:
Code:

set default=0
set timeout=10
set root=(hd1,1)

menuentry "Gentoo" {
         linux /boot/image-3 root=/dev/sdb1
}

I can boot easily manually, by:
Code:

grub rescue> root (hd1,1)
grub rescue> insmod /boot/grub/_linux.mod
grub rescue> linux /boot/image-3 root=/dev/sdb1
grub rescue> boot

My device.map
Code:

(hd0)   /dev/sda
(hd1)   /dev/sdb

Cheers,
F.

Thx vaxbrat but are you sure your cfg is for grub2?

Does the grub ebuild you used have RESTRICT="strip" ?
Without that line, the stripping process breaks the grub binaries, and you get stuck in rescue mode.

ps. You may also want to try the 9999 ebuild for grub, because 1.96 is about 1 year old, and a lot of changes have taken place.

Thanks mate.
Removing STRIP_MASK and adding RESTRICT=strip instead helped very much.
But as you suggest I also changed my ebuild from 1.96 to 9999 and all works fine.

I just installed grub2 (9999) from the official tree but it also doesn't work. I get all the fancy things when doing it manually at the grub prompt but not at normal start-up. Then I end up with the normal text-mode (rescue mode?). The ebuild also has the STRIP_MASK and no RESTRICT=strip and I followed the discussion on bugs.gentoo.org. So @Flybro does your 9999 ebuild work without modification?
------------------
p.s. RESTRICT="strip" didn't do the trick. It seems that it's another problem. Any suggestions?

Finally, it works and RESTRICT="strip" did the trick, I just had a typo in my grub.cfg...

Does anyone already know how to apply a patch to the ebuild to be able to use gfxmenu with grub2 as described on http://grub.gibibit.com?
