Hi,

I finally got enough of ALSA/PulseAudio and decided to try OSS4. So I installed media-sound/oss-4.1.1052b from oss-overlay.

The problem I have is that /dev/oss is:
Code:
drwx------ 3 root root

So while I can change mixer setings wish ossmix, I can only use osstest as root. I would like something like:
Code:
drwxr-x--- 3 root audio

for the oss directory, and:
Code:
drwxr----- 3 root audio

for the files within.

I tried the following /etc/udev/rules.d/50-oss.rules:
Code:
KERNEL=="oss*", GROUP="audio" MODE=660

That didn't help. The modules loaded by the OSS initscript are osscore, oss_hdaudio, and oss_usb.

Could anyone please help?

Thanks!

I also posted this here: http://4front-tech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=12825

It turns out udev is not involved in any way, and my umask was the problem.

I will test this at home and mark it as solved if it works.

try using the oss-devel-9999 ebuild
I find that to be alot better (be it you pull a b0rked commit sometimes)

this is my /dev/oss
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 60 2009-07-09 19:49 oss

Its the actual drivers via ossdetect that make the /dev/oss/* folders

Also check in /var/log/soundon.log
EVERYTHING oss4 does on init is logged there
