X server does not start, it works with x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.7.1 and I have no idea what the problem is. The hardware is Intel 945 GM. Does anyone else has similar problems?

I've the same problem and the same hardware.

No way to recover my display after I try opening X. I can only reboot the laptop from an ssh connection.

Also:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=278119

This driver is basically 2.8beta2 so do just not use it untill true 2.8 will come out. It already fixed many important bugs, but looks like we have some regressions too.

Also try DRI "False" in xorg.conf, but it will be big perfomance loss too.

Strangely (given my past experience) this one works fine
for me but I did have to set

Code:
    Option      "AccelMethod"   "UXA"

in device section of xorg.conf

Not overlay stuff, this package is in the tree, though not stable. (but not hard masked).

Exactly same with my Intel Atom 330 board:

1) emerge
2) startx
3) mouse cursor shown but halted, keyboard no response
4) ssh login from remote
5) /var/log/Xorg.0.log seems fine
6) dmesg reported an error with drm
7) downgrade
8) reboot
9) startx ok

Regards.
