I'm trying to get Compiz installed, and can't seem to do it...

I'm logged in as a user, a su - root'ed in my console.

Code:
GentooBox ~ # compiz-manager
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 10de:040d (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: present.
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Comparing resolution (1920x1200) to maximum 3D texture size (8192): Passed.
Checking for nVidia: present.
Checking for FBConfig: present.
Checking for Xgl: not present.
/usr/bin/compiz: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libcompizconfig.so.0: undefined symbol: iniparser_new

That's what I get after a flicker on my screen, and a very obvious crash of Compiz trying to start. Anyone have any ideas on how to finally get Compiz fully installed?
-Pat :)

What version of libcompizconfig do you have? There's apparently a bug in r2.

You may need to downgrade.

Code:

#echo ">=x11-libs/libcompizconfig-0.8.2-r2" >> /etc/portage/package.mask
# emerge libcompizconfig

There's another thread on here about this. Just search for libcompizconfig and you should find it. Here's the emerald command recommended from that thread (although emerald --replace & was enough for me)

Code:

emerald --replace & LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 INTEL_BATCH=1 compiz --replace --indirect-rendering --sm-disable ccp &> /tmp/compiz.log

FYI: This did get compiz working for me, but it definitely is not quite stable for kde 4 yet. I'm back to kwin.

If you run compiz/compiz-manager as ROOT then you may have ruined your install.
Also you can not START emerald BEFORE compiz. So this command is wrong. Emerald
is a composite decorator so it needs a composite desktop 'compiz' active in order to work.
Code:
emerald --replace & LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 INTEL_BATCH=1 compiz --replace --indirect-rendering --sm-disable ccp &

This would be correct.
Code:
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 INTEL_BATCH=1 compiz --replace --indirect-rendering --sm-disable ccp & emerald --replace &

Because you ran compiz as ROOT you should check to see that permissions were not altered on those
components and correct them as needed.
