notice that this is part of kms... I've suggested to disable kms.

Thaks for your input.

Since there are no gentoo-sources available for 2.6.33 I guess I'll have to wait. I thought there might be a trick to get this to work with 2.6.32 since there are already kernel options for hdmi audio.

Status with radeon and radeonhd on my system - just in case anyone is interested:
RS780 HD3200 radeon onboard chip. Latest gentoo-sources 2.6.32-r1, mesa-9999, drm-9999, xf86-video-ati-9999, xf86-video-radeonhd-9999.
KMS does not work with latest gentoo-sources. It crashes (black screen) at boot on populating /dev. -> KMS switched off.
There is no audio over hdmi with the in-kernel driver (dns_hda_codec_atihdmi).
Xbmc runs quite fine with the radeon driver (xf86-video-ati). Diashows are painfully slow though. Videos not yet tested. No audio over hdmi.
With radeonhd the whole system crashes on startup of xbmc. Sound oder hdmi is working. Direct rendering is working. Glxgears is working.

The crashing with latest kernel could be due to IRQ support -- in which case you'll have to get the firmware, as described earlier in this thread. IRQ support needs extra firmware (not supplied with the kernel yet) and it hangs if it doesn't find it.

AFAIK (correct me if I'm wrong), KMS only works with radeon, not with radeonhd. KMS+TTM+memory manager is really really important for future development, and it's really cool to have it, even if the performance is a bit lower ATM.

I followed this thread on phoronix for using firmware with kms but the error remains.

Code:
modprobe radeon modeset=1
gives the same hard lockup with black screen like on reboot.
Is there a way I can check/log what exactly fails?

'Edit: when I start xorg I find the following lines in my dmesg:
Code:

 no need for gentoo-sources for rc-releases

you might be interested in vanilla-sources (latest is 2.6.33-rc3)

Code:
emerge =vanilla-sources-2.6.33_rc3* -av

Thanks for the input.
I'm using the latest vanilla-sources now and it partially works. :D

Partially means:
The screen goes still black on boot but the system starts and if I login "blind" I can startx. After x is started I have my usual screen back and audio over HDMI is working.
I'm still wondering about the black screen on the console.
Back to digging through logfiles... ;)

You could be having an issue with some of the framebuffer devices interfering with the builtin KMS framebuffer.

Try disabling all the framebuffer consoles when compiling your kernel. It should help.

When booting, it should automatically switch to your screen's native resolution.

Hi everyone. Well, I can happily say that everything has been running pretty well for a few months! I've been using a stable system with just libdrm, mesa and xf86-video-ati from svn (and a few other minimum requirements from ~arch). However, mesa (the source, not the ebuild) just recently started depending on a newer version of some X library/module, and I'm a bit reluctant to upgrade to unstable X, so I downgraded mesa to 7.7. That seems fine as I don't have any particular requirements for OpenGL 2.x, but I am curious, are any of you running xorg-server-1.7? Experiences?

And what's the latest on KMS for Radeon HD 4000? The .32 sources say that r600/r700 is still underway. Is that right? I'm trying to stick with as much stable software as possible these days, but I'm curious.

Thanks!

I'm running bleeding edge ati, lib drm mesa etc:
Code:

media-fonts/font-util-9999
app-arch/xz-utils-9999
x11-libs/libdrm-9999
x11-proto/dri2proto-9999
x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-9999
media-libs/mesa-9999

Together with x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.4

And I'm getting the following from glxgears:
Code:
6146 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1229.158 FPS
6123 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1224.548 FPS
6175 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1234.641 FPS
6031 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1205.643 FPS

Very stable, though I get a warning about missing IRQs disabling VBlank.

What CPU and graphics card?

I ask because I get ~2,600 FPS but with 60-70% CPU utilization.

KMS should work fine with .32, but you'll have to enable it in staging during compile time, if you want it on by default.

If you load radeon by hand, you'll have to pass the modeset parameter to it. It is off by default.

I've been running it for several months on my 4550 and it's great.

This should go away with the .33 kernel. IRQ support is in there.

Unfortunately, I've been getting rather poor glxgears results under DRI2 these days. It went up to 1800 fps in the early, incomplete days, but it's around 600 now.

OpenArena doesn't seem to be affected, I get pretty much the same fps there whatever I do.

And a heads-up -- QuakeLive doesn't work with GLSL, it drops to software. You'll have to disable GLSL manually at compile time if you want to play QuakeLive.

Yeah, right, interesting. I pulled the 60-70% figure from just looking at a graph, but top tells a different story...

Code:
PID USER      PR  NI  VIRT  RES  SHR S %CPU %MEM    TIME+  COMMAND
 1615 jeremy    40   0  341m 5516 2596 R   93  0.2   0:49.70 glxgears
 2103 root      40   0 1157m 385m 8472 R    9 12.8  33:59.70 X

I don't have many OpenGL apps to test with at the moment, but the one game that I play under Wine seems to fine, no lag. Meh, I think all the numbers are a bit mysterious at the moment.

Actually, looks like I spoke too soon, because I've just started to notice a bunch of visual artefacts since I downgraded mesa and libdrm. Windows aren't repainting properly, widgets disappearing, etc. I imagine I'll be testing out xorg-server-1.7 pretty soon.

What did you downgrade to?

Some versions of Mesa had painting artifacts with KWin. It got fixed eventually, but was quite annoying while it lasted.

What did you downgrade to?

Some versions of Mesa had painting artifacts with KWin. It got fixed eventually, but was quite annoying while it lasted.

mesa-7.7-r1

I'm thinking of trying out xorg-server-1.7, but there is a warning about incompatibility with dev-libs/soprano -- anyone know about this? I can't imagine it being too serious, since I don't use akonadi or nepomuk.

Hello. I have HP nx6325 notebook with:

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M]

I'm still getting "software rasterizer":

Paste the output of 'emerge --info' and /var/log/Xorg.0.log to http://dpaste.com and then post links to them here. (I know some people don't like that way of doing things, but I think it's justified.) Cheers.

With that card, you don't need anything experimental.

Emerge standard, stable mesa + drivers and you should have accelerated 3d out of the box. What do you have installed? Which Mesa, which libdrm, which kernel, what driver (radeon or radeonhd)? We need more info.

Try upgrading, I think that the mesa/KWin error was around that timeframe, in one of the release candidates.

On a related note: Did anyone manage to get Mesa+Radeon working in a multilib environment? As in, build both 32-bit and 64-bit libs, so that the 32-bit applications (such as QuakeLive) also get accelerated? Any experiences there?

I went back to mesa-9999 and xorg-server-1.7 yesterday and everything things seems pretty fine, though I have noticed the occasional graphical corruption.

For starters, I would choose either "radeon" or "ati" for your VIDEO_CARDS entry, but not both. My advice is to remove "ati" from VIDEO_CARDS and unmerge the ati-drivers package. Have you followed the Hardware 3D Acceleration Guide? There is something wrong with your DRM modules, as evidenced by lines 336-8 in your Xorg.0.log:
Code:
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch.
[dri] radeon kernel module version is 2.0.0 but version 1.17.0 or newer is needed.
[dri] Disabling DRI.

Check your kernel settings, try making them built-in instead of modules or vice versa.

Are you sure? This looks to me like a problem comparing two version strings, which is made by a X component or library. I'm not sure how making radeon driver built-in would solve this issue... I was rather thinking of libdrm or mesa instead.

Yes, I'd definitely remove all traces of the proprietary driver. The catalyst driver interferes with the open driver, and you cannot have both installed at the same time.

Other than that, everything seems OK, that combination should work well. No isea.
