Trying to install gentoo on a 5-year-old powerbook G4.

However, whenever we try to boot to the CD we get to the screen where you are supposed to boot up the kernel. When there, if we hit enter to boot into the default kernel, it acts like it is going to boot up for a minute and then complains of a memory access error and boots into OpenFirmware.

I am not sure, however I believe this to be due to the fact that the only kernel available on the CD is named G5, which one would assume is meant to work on the G5 not the G4. This is in direct conflict with the directions which state that the CD should contain a generic kernel named "apple".

We have tried this with 3 different CDs:
install-powerpc-minimal-20090712.iso
install-powerpc-minimal-2008.0.iso
install-powerpc-universal-2008.0.iso

So are we just making some stupid error in choosing which ISO to download? Have they stopped supporting anything but G5? Or do we need to file a bug report?

(The link below is a picture of what comes up when we boot it up)

Have you tried entering "ppc32" for booting? This should load a 32bit kernel.

EDIT: G4 CPUs seems to be 32bit only. http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Safe_Cflags/PowerPC#PowerPC_7400.2F7410_.28G4.29

Thank you, that was just what we needed.

I find it odd that hitting tab in the boot prompt only listed the "G5" kernel. Do you think that bears submitting a bug report, or should I just go on with my business?

According to your screenshot, ppc32 was listed as well in the same line as "G5" and "G5-ttyS0,57600".

*smacks self on forehead*

For some reason I was expecting that they would be listed on seperate lines and was just figuring that everything on that line was just listing stuff about the G5 kernel.

Well...I feel extremely stupid now.
