Just wondering when FF 3.5 (or above) will be marked stable?
I am also curious as to why it's not stable now?
If it's some obscure app that I don't use has problems, then I may try moving over to ff in ~x86

Well, https://bugs.gentoo.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=firefox-3.5 shows 17 bugs right now, including hangs and segfaults. I guess those have to be resolved first.

Try the following if you're uber keen and don't want to switch your whole platform to ~x86

Code:

emerge -av app-portage/autounmask
autounams -n www-client/firefox-2.5.2-r1
emerge -av firefox

Have to say I've found this version to be quite unstable, I can't even log in to the Gentoo forums with it, it just segfaults (although this could be an underlying problem with the new glibc).

It's weird, cos I am using 3.5 on Windows, daily.

I use it daily on Gentoo (~x86 and ~amd64) without any problems.

That you can use it daily doesn't mean anything about it's stability for the rest of the people. It would do us no good if the stability of packages was decided based on a single user, with a single machine or a single architecture and a single set of USE flags. The world is much broader and the bugs at bugzilla demonstrate it.

Packages only go into stable when they work for a reasonable number of persons (though in the case of firefox this is more like an utopia  ). The way that Gentoo set that criteria is: "when a package has been without any critical bug open for 30 days", so I'd say that it's still a bit until firefox 3.5 can be marked stable in Gentoo.

I have been finding 3.5.x more unstable by the day. I have it lock up on different sites etc that I have always gone to . I am almost to the point of backing off, and it seems to get worst with every .x revision.

I also upgraded this evening and have faced no problems so far. FF-3.5 seems a bit snappier which is nice, but not a huge difference. Now I jsut need to find a compatible theme that doesn't look terrible (always a challenge on FF version upgrades  )

Was going to try it but the damned thing NEEDS alsa-libs and dbus now for some reason so I've had to mask it. (This machine doesn't even have a soundcard!)

Thankfully I don't use Firefox much so it isn't a big thing, but I do hope that alsa and dbus get put back to optional dependencies rather than hard ones...

I was going to compile it but then I remembered why I use the binary version (The compiled one has an even more ridiculous dependency list!)

Using it too, well, this is certainly the most recent & upto date nagivator for browsing the web.
But it's also one crappy release :D
Maybe the QA guys were on holidays or they were push by IE, chrome... release, but result is more than bad.

Its also been marked as stable on PPC, but this results in a xulrunner version conflict if you have VLC installed....

Total: 8 packages (7 upgrades, 1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

net-libs/xulrunner:1.9

('ebuild', '/', 'net-libs/xulrunner-1.9.1.2-r1', 'merge') pulled in by
    >=net-libs/xulrunner-1.9.1.2[-java] required by ('ebuild', '/', 'www-client/mozilla-firefox-3.5.2-r1', 'merge')

    <net-libs/xulrunner-1.9.1 required by ('installed', '/', 'media-video/vlc-0.9.10', 'nomerge')
    (and 1 more)

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in the
dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can not be
installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page
or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- xfce-base/xfce4-extras-4.4.2 (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Samuli Suominen <ssuominen@gentoo.org> (09 Aug 2009)
# Outdated virtual for Xfce 4.4. Use eix to search for
# xfce plugins you want to install. This meta only covered
# old ones. Unnecessary maintaince burden for minor arches
# if we wanted to keep this up to date. Masked for removal.

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Will be checking and filling a bug a bit later (must get on with some work now though!), should be easy enough to revise the VLC ebuild to use the new version of xulrunner I'd imagine though.

ignoring at the moment. firefox 3.5.x is running fine for me. using it atm to post this forum reply.

guess i may have to author some temporary /etc/portage/package.mask entr(y|ies).

V-Li (developer) mentioned that they reverted back to the 3.0.x for the issue mentioned in the above topic:

------------------------------------------------------------
for those firefox 3.5.x is working ok for, add these three lines:
Code:

=net-libs/xulrunner-1.9.1.2-r1 ~x86
=www-client/mozilla-firefox-3.5.2-r1 ~x86
=x11-libs/cairo-1.8.8 ~x86

to your /etc/portage/package.keywords for a temporary suspension of the downgrade.

Well, FF 3.5 is working just fine for me, although I have noticed a couple of downgrades again in todays update, particularly xulrunner + FF

:-(

I would just mask versions less than 3.5 to prevent the downgrade. FF3.5 has been working fine for me since I installed it ~2 weeks after the windows version was released.

i tried the mask files and couldn't get it work. any working examples?

yesterday morning, i updated my /etc/portage.keywords file to:

Code:

net-libs/xulrunner ~x86
www-client/mozilla-firefox ~x86
x11-libs/cairo ~x86

so, it wasn't so version specific. portage was wanting to downgrade again, because the versions i specified were obsoleted and such.

building mozilla-firefox-3.5.2-r2 today.
