From MPlayer's homepage:

Just a quick note, if you got some DVD's as a gift, mplayer -nocache dvdnav:// should play your new movies better than dvd://.

You might want to open a bug about it since it's a problem with the portage version of mplayer too.

Anyway, the file in question is in my /usr/portage/distfiles and I uploaded it here:

http://foss.math.aegean.gr/~realnc/mplayer/svgalib_helper-1.9.17-mplayer.tar.gz

this would be really useful while using chromium, youtube and HTML5 video if there was an ebuild for ffmpeg-mt

There seems to be a live ebuild for it:

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=268392

Didn't try it yet though.

New update: mplayer-1.0_rc4_p20100128
  • ffmpeg-mt updated to f3f3d11 (118 new commits)
  • mplayer updated to r30452
  • ebuild now grabs svgalib_helper-1.9.17-mplayer.tar.gz from my server since the original URL in the portage ebuild (http://dev.gentoo.org/~ssuominen/) does not work anymore.

From the bug above:

ffmpeg-mt is a "Google Summer of Code" project of ffmpeg. So yes, it's upstream
sponsored and the plan is to include it.

I'm very excited to try this when I get home. I recently bought a sony hd video recorder and since my graphics card (nvidia 6800) doesn't support on board processing of x.264 video I have been having choppy playback of my videos on linux. I first thought that maybe even with a quad core processor it was too much to handle but I "hope" that it is because version of mplayer I had wasn't multi threading.

Thanks for the hard work and I will report back on my success/failure after I try this tonite.

New update: mplayer-1.0_rc4_p20100311
  • ffmpeg-mt updated to d62b7c0 (743 new commits)
  • mplayer updated to r30881
  • ebuild synced with current portage version (there were USE flag changes)
This is quite a big update for ffmpeg-mt, which is now in-sync with upstream ffmpeg.

The ebuild can now be found in the "wirelay" overlay, which is in layman (layman -a wirelay) if you're too lazy to manually grab updates from Bugzilla ;)

Thank you, it is annoying to check for updates manually, especially when we can use layman instead!

Am I the only one who has problems with MPEG2 (DVDs) and mplayer-mt with more than 1 thread?

it's a well known problem, and i've seen it on normal non-mt mplayer+ffmpeg too.

Yes, that's the plan. In fact, Alex (the maintainer of wirelay) is monitoring bugzilla in order to update the ebuild in the overlay.
