I want to install icedtea6, and I got gcc[+gcj] ready. But it appears that icedtea6-bin is a dependency of icedtea6:
Code:
mycoolamd64box ~ # emerge -pvt icedtea6

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

Total: 16 packages (16 new), Size of downloads: 109,525 kB
Portage tree and overlays:
 [0] /usr/portage
 [1] /usr/local/portage/layman/java-overlay

I see here a chicken-and-egg situation...
Also if I emerge gcj-jdk separately, portage wants to install virtual/{jre,jdk}-1.5.0, but I need only virtual/{jre,jdk}-1.6.0.

Additionally, I noticed that on amd64+multilib, gcj USE-flag makes emul-linux-x86-xlibs as dependency, but on x86, the xlibs in question are only there if both gcj and gtk USE flags are used. I patched the ebuild to remove this dependency if gtk USE-flag is not set, and it might even work...

Is there any way I can build icedtea6 without installing an older binary version of itself?

I think you need icedtea from previous version to compile it, I think that if you will emerge it and run revdep=rebuild, the existing old version will be unmerged.
it looks like a recurcive compiler dependecy.

I just hope you realize that sun-java now works great on 64bit systems, the java plugin for firefox is basically fully functional so I assume that you want to get involved with the HEADACHE of iced tea because you want free software? If not, don't bother, go with sun java.

You're right, didn't read that quite so carefully. All I'm trying to do is warn the guy that icedtea is difficult and problematic in comparison to sun java which is pretty straightforward. Before the inclusion of the sun java plugin, there was reason to desire icedtea, now I see none.
