I have succeeded in compiling the linux kernel with the Intel C++ compiler version 11.1.056 and BFS patch 232 and it WORKS! more info about how to do this is available at http://groups.google.com/group/linuxdna

I have made available the source here..

Is there any point to this other than the obvious "because I can", did you notice any performance gains over a gcc compiled kernel?

The bfs 232 patchset? do you notice any improvements over say... 211?
I tried it when it was 211 and while it did seem ok, it would cause lockups with 3D games

I definitely notice a difference when compiling with the BFS patch, I am in the process of running some benches comparing the icc kernel to vanilla 2.6.31.1 and vanilla patched with the bfs 232 patch and I'll post the results, hopfully with favorable reults

C++ is a superset of C, with a few exceptions. I doubt there's a C++ compiler anywhere that doesn't do both.

there are significant gains with the BFS patch with or without compiling with icc.. although the 3d tests show about a 5% gain with icc vs gcc...

Just for info: BFS is now at version 0.240. This version includes a very important bug fix that corrects issues with stalled processes (like 3D apps freezing and being unable to kill them.)
