Hi, n00b here.

Used to run Redhat/CentOS on x86 architectures a few years ago, but never really felt like I truly understood the system. Got an old B&W G3 I can't bring myself to donate away, so I'm here trying to achieve two goals: Get B&W Root Gear (Hostname) running, and better understand Linux as a whole. So far, one of the two goals is working out, but I'll let you guess which.

Just for clarity, I see these:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2008.0/handbook-ppc.xml

Best I can tell, they're the same. The disk I just downloaded was the 2008.0 disk, which is the latest per the front page. Is there something I'm missing?
http://bouncer.gentoo.org/fetch/gentoo-2008.0-universal/ppc/

The guide NEVER makes mention of the ppc32 kernel on the disk; it says to type 'apple'. I found that after a little inspection. I'm curious what other details I'm missing in that regards. Just some clarity and guidance on where to start. I've already got a kernel compiled, I'm trying to boot, and getting the "root=" error, but I do believe I found my fix in that the HD is hda when booting solo, not HDC. *doh* Going to try this when I get home.

Anyhow, hello, howdy, buenos dias, and thanks again for anything that can be cleared up.

i´d go for one of these f.ex., which looks more updated.
Be sure to also pick an update stage, it will save you time compiling / updating stuff.

take your time, read the guide and understand what you are doing. Maybe there are some parts that aren´t correct or updated, but you should not have (m)any troubles with the handbook.

cheers
