I like #2. It looks like a penguin Buddha, which is the idea. Personally, I think the use of text is a bit busy, but that's just a thought. Over all, I really like the new designs...no matter which one winds up being the "one">

Blessed be!

Love it! That's pretty much what I saw when I suggested it.

I do not mean to offend anyone, but I find this logo disturbing. I can not really put my finger on it. Maybe it is the "bindi" - red dot on the forehead (which is typical for women in South Asia) or maybe the smile. I appreciate the effort (I would not be able to pull of something half as good) but I would go with the first one.

sorry raul, but i think buddha very often has bindi too :o
this one looks more like a laser pointer in his stylized form  maybe a red vertical oval (not a circle) should be better ;)

http://omploader.org/vMmx5YQ/budda-color.svg

btw, no prob removing it :)

http://omploader.org/vMmx5Ng/budda-color2.svg

dunno what can be disturbing in the smile

It is not the bindi - it is the colour. Red bindi is often used by married women in India. :) Looks better without it.

Just built my first zen kernel, thanks guys

uname -a

Linux gentoo 2.6.30-zen9 #1 ZEN SMP Sat Oct 24 02:40:34 EDT 2009 i686 Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Love the gentoo "G" in the framebuffer. I'd love to see the smiling budda as an option in there too.

Thanks for all the hard work !

I don't want to sound destructive in my criticism, so please don't be offended: If I saw this logo and I didn't know that it's supposed to be a buddha penguin, I'd guess that it's a demented guy wearing a diving suit and holding a Marge Simpson style necklace. The buddhistic/hinduistic symbols don't suffice to make people recognize this is supposed to be buddha, unless there is additional information (like the word "zen"). I'd try to make the penguin look like it is meditating. Maybe have him sit in the lotus position on a cloud or something :)

Oh, and I too feel like there is something creepy about this picture. A creature with a penguin body and a human face and an intense smile just looks a little grotesque.

IMO count_zero's in that case suits it the best

Can't tell ATM what in dirty is as the machine became inaccessible via ssh shortly after this bug appeared and now only responds to ping. There are 2 GB of RAM and some 1 GB swap partition. I'm not sure whether system-partition is involved as there are more reiser4 partitions formatted with different settings (root, home, ccache, portage with gzip/lzo compression enabled). But yes, considering major malfunction of system, bug is probably related to system partition. There were some 3 GB free on system partition, portage and ccache were used at cca. 30 % after flush. Distfiles and paludis work dir were symlinked to home partition with plethora of free space. Also I removed one copy of kernel sources from root partition shortly before I started building new kernel, so space should not be an issue. I already realized that rebuilding reiser4 on volume which ran out of space really is time consuming operation .

I strongly agree with this. In my opinion, both the shortlisted logos fade pale in comparison to count_zero's submission. As I pointed out earlier the smiling Buddha logo is disturbing to me. Even without the red Bindi - the smile and the colours somehow makes it appears creepy to me.
The second logo is decent, but there is nothing particular about it. As in, there is nothing unique to it. count_zero's submission on the other hand is both unique and serene. The colour combination is also very appealing.

In my opinion, it would be great if the devs could reconsider the shortlisted submissions.

The logo has not been finalized yet - it can still change (just figure a banner on the website is better than no banner). The main problems with the count_zero logo were only the text (textless would be superb) - and not so sure about the color scheme :P (it would be best to fit into the blue-ish colors of zen-kernel.org) - maybe the dark blue/light blue from there instead of the dark purple/light purple similar to gentoo. Dark blue being just that outline around the text and boxes.

There was a page on zen-sources detailing each patch, what it was, and where it came from. I'd like to see that again.

NQS

I second that!

I think you need to run fsck on your reiser4 partitions. I did the same switch as you and haven't noticed anything but increase scheduler efficiency. I have 3 reiser4 partitions, root, /home, and /usr/portage and haven't had any problems even with a few test emerge -e @system @worlds for testing.

Then it's a good thing that the logo won't last past consolefont starting, and there are no easily frightened kiddies who run with Zen kernels.

Blessed be!
