Well, I've been seeing Zen threads on the forums for quite a while....can I ask...what sets the Zen kernel apart from the others? I'm curious now...seems to be a lot of passion/controversy over the sources at the moment.

Very good question, i just wrote about it in the FAQ section (which are very good explanations):
http://zen-kernel.org/faq

something thats missing still is the "why use it" question, but that's somewhat answered in the first one.

*edit*
Gar gar gar,
content is coming to the site in bunches! Theme/logo will be determined by the end of the week.

I chose the font for readability, especially if/when it is resized to an icon. But yes if you want a less "traditional" font take a look here http://www.dafont.com/ and give me some ideas. And I'll add the eyes when I get a chance, can't promise they will look good. Penguins have beady evil little eyes.

my stabs;

The kanji used is read as 'zen', and implies "whole & complete", something that may be applicable to these sources (dunno, actually never used 'em yet) :P

Should we have forums? (phpbb3 or other, will they be used?). I think we should, they will be phpbb3 most likely if we had them and integrated with the plone user accounts. The only concern is that they won't be worth the space they take up on the server. I know people didn't like them before mainly because of the annoyances with the drupal module (but of course phpbb3 is a much better system)

It would be nice to have discussions there but Im not so sure if many people will post (although integrating with plone account is a huge benefit, anyone registered on zen-kernel.org would be able to post on the forums)
If you do decide to go that route, there is at least one available add-on to handle authentication for you.

You should use this for the kanji: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen#Etymology

As I stated on the related bug, ebuilds for 2.6.30 and 2.6.31 zen-sources will hit the portage tonight. I added a warning message as well ( that zen-sources are not supported in any case by Gentoo Kernel Team )

I think there is nothing left to be done

This kanji?:
http://tangorin.com/kanji/%E7%A6%85
This is the 'proper' kanji specific to 'zen Buddhism', but i wanted something with more implied meaning related to gentoo/linux

This is actually the one I was leaning towards, meaning "virtuous" or "good":
http://tangorin.com/kanji/%E5%96%84

However, the idea of 'completeness' seemed most applicable: "complete sources" seems to sum up the project a bit better
http://tangorin.com/kanji/%E5%85%A8

my idea isn't final, I'll re-work it a bit when I get a chance...

Please update the 1st post since 2.6.30-r9 and 2.6.31-r4 are on portage tree now.

Overlay will remain a testing place for everybody who is willing to test future releases before they hit the portage

Many thanks

On zen-kernel.org, in the top menu bar, can you change Instructionals to Tutorials or something like that. I am not sure if Instructionals is even a word. :)

Unionfs and aufs code seem to conflict, where unionfs breaks aufs.

I decided to drop unionfs in favor of aufs, for a few reasons.
1.) Aufs is maintained more actively than unionfs, and in a git repository (++, much preferred over the release-only patches of unionfs)
2.) Aufs is closer to achieving mainline inclusion

They basically both accomplish the same thing, except the status of both and how they are maintained/made is much more favorable to aufs. If unionfs code didn't break aufs it wouldn't be a problem, but since it does I'm inclined to favor aufs.

*Edit*
Zen is now in portage with the latest sync (stable versions only, there will be no rc ebuilds)

Thank you

this is what i totally agree with

sad to hear 'bout that. i would prefer aufs over unionfs for the reasons mentioned above, but there´s one thing i did´nt find out: unionfs somehow gets notified if my (de)squashed portage folder gets changed by emerge-/eix-update. if i dont run any of those, the image simply gets unmounted without recompressing the whole /usr/portage which was´nt touched in any way. using aufs this happens on any halt/reboot.
any suggestions ?

I haven't used forums on zen-sources.org because they were badly laid out with almost no discussion going on. I usually found answers to my actual problems with ZS right here, even when this forum was officially abandoned in favor of zen-sources.org forum, just because of living user base. I'm not principally against official forum, but what about content? Is it really beneficial to have forum with few distro sections like Arch, Gentoo, *buntu, … or is it better to have these discussions going on on respective distro forums?
rahulthewall wrote:

I agree with need of good distro-specific guides (and I'm comfortable with fact cheater is in charge ). Regarding latter part, it might be interesting to know percentage of different distributions runing ZS. Personally I do not run gentoo on laptops anymore, I installed Arch instead. But I have to admit gentoo way of getting new ZS running is regarding much less pain.

Distro specific guides are already on the site (not for arch, i'm not totally sure how arch works with pkgbuilds so i can't write the guide yet)

@mantoo
I'd have to take that up with the aufs developer and see what can be done about that, PM with some detailed info about exactly what happens on unionfs and what doesn't/should happen on aufs

Thanks

*edit*
Finally fixed all the broken content and there are great tutorials and a few good FAQs so far:
http://zen-kernel.org/tutorials

Arch is the one im not so sure about, if anyone wants to PM me how to use the pkgbuilds and what not i'd appreciate it :D

A mailing list would probably work better than a forum if it's going to be low traffic.

Okay, I got bored. Here's my try for a logo (made entirely in inkscape):
