Oh, yes. That's awesome! If he makes it, he'll need a name.

This is really nice- the best so far. However, IMO the penguin needs a little tweaking- less abstract and a little more realistic "penguiny" features, like maybe the eyes and a slightly more "tuxedo like" white/black body. Maybe yellowish feet? Maybe even a re-designed penguin, but keeping the overall background design/font?

Erm, the kanji is basically 'wrong' here, as you've included the negative-space created by the 'arms' of my design.
Take a look at the 'kanji only' design on the right-hand side: http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p74/DNAspark99/random/zen-sources.png
also, fwiw, you should create a new version of the kanji, as the one depicted is slightly tweaked out of it's proper proportions in the design with the meditating silhouette to make it 'fit'. (eg: the top part has been shrunk - again, far right 'kanji only' design is still in the proper proportions)
Other than that, not bad, I like the colors :p

Ha, you're right--I'm obviously not trained in kanji, and simply traced your character. I'll try to fix the proportions to match the far right design. Thanks!

I chose the colors to be a subtle reflection of Gentoo's purple motif, and I tried to portray the penguin as meditating blindfolded. That's kind of how I see the Zen sources, as well--they have their origins in Gentoo, and forge thoughtfully into the "unknown" future of the Linux kernel.

Thanks for all the compliments!
This is my first experiment with Inkscape in awhile--I used Corel Draw back in college (could never get it to work in Linux with wine), but I see Inkscape has really improved over the years. I'll upload the SVG file, too, so others can tweak the design if they like. Nothing like open source, even in graphic design!

Okay, I've fixed the kanji problem.

Here's the preview:

and here's the svg:

I encourage anyone to download the svg and improve upon it!

There was a page on zen-sources detailing each patch, what it was, and where it came from. I'd like to see that again.

I don't think so,
looks like the hso driver is only maintained in the kernel now (the updates to it look newer than hso 1.12)

The two it has come down to so far:
http://omploader.org/vMmx1OQ
http://omploader.org/vMmx1Yg

Thanks to all the other ones who have submitted, these 2 are the ones that have been narrowed down by us.

count_zero's purple one was also very much liked - except the text and colors kinda threw it off for the banner and website.
DNASpark99's and Saundersx' were behind that in the consensus. Both were very good, the consensus we came up with was that DNASpark99's represented zen while Saundersx' represented linux. Neither really representing both. (although both were still very good)

I didn't pay much attention to the submissions, but looking at the second one, if I was a small child i'd be scared.

not that I have a vote here, but I say go for the first one
