Hello.
So here is my problem :
I've installed doom3 through the ebuild games-fps/doom3.
I've copied from my doom 3 installation cds the necessary pk4 files.
When I run the game, it crashes with Segmentation Fault a few seconds after OpenGL initialization.

Here is the log of the crash :
Code:

qdii@seepid /usr/games/bin $ doom3

What I tried so far :
1. running as root
2. debugging with gdb (but doom3 has, obviously, no debugging symbols). I was planning to install glibc debugging symbol, but I'd prefer to find a solution before going hardcore.
3. adding export LD_PRELOAD="libGL.so.1", or export LD_PRELOAD="libGL.so" to doom3 launching script.
By the way there's no libGL.so.1 in my /usr/lib.
4. starting a fresh X session, without gnome, and launching the game from console (with DISPLAY set of course).
5. I did NOT recompile glibc with ntpl USE-flag (which doesn't make sense insofar as the flag is set on automaticly now)
6. checking whether IA32 emulation was set on my kernel, and yes it is.

I'm using intel module, 2.6.31-r1 kernel, my proc is 64 bits intel, alsa output (with pulseaudio). The computer is quite recent although my graphic card is bad, and the game can be run on Windows.

Here we are... any idea ?

My guess is that you might require a 32-bit libGL.so (/usr/lib32/libGL.so). (Same for quake3-bin, the 64-bit icculus version doesn't require 32-bit libs I guess.) I had a similar crash on my Nvidia graphics on amd64 - I had manually installed nvidia-drivers and didn't install the 32-bit libs, and after installing those, doom3 works.

Hello
I followed your intuition :
I emerged (fetch only!) nvidia-drivers, unzipped the package, found the /usr/lib32 part
I created a nvidiaOpenGL folder within my /usr/lib32 and created the following simlinks :

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 oct 22 09:16 libGL.la -> nvidiaOpenGL/libGL.la

still the same segfault :X

But you cannot install nvidia-drivers as you have an Intel graphics and so the nvidia-drivers (and the GL libraries) will not work for you. What I meant is that you need the 32-bit /usr/lib32/libGL.so (usually comes from the mesa package) from one of the emul-linux-x86 packages. I had a quick check as to which package provides it:
Code:
equery belongs /usr/lib32/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/libGL.so.1.2
 * Searching for /usr/lib32/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/libGL.so.1.2 ...
app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs-20081109 (/usr/lib32/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/libGL.so.1.2)

, so there, you need to emerge the package emul-linux-x86-xlibs. Also, please don't forget to run
Code:
eselect opengl set xorg-x11

to set up the appropriate libGL.so links automagically.

(PS: Ideally you should try the latest =app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs-20091004_rc1 by unmasking, but the older 20081109 should do. Note that I had an issue with emul-linux-x86-gtklibs-20081109_rc1 as 32-bit gtk apps like acroread failed to get some config files - see this bug for details if interested.)

Hello.
First try with stable drivers was a failure : same segmentation fault. I ensured libGL.so was pointing to the good file.
Then I unmasked the newest version, and ... yes it did work !
I couldn't believe it :)
Thanks a lot !!

This was the positive side. The negative one is that I have 0.3 FPS ( i.e. around 1 image every 3 seconds ).
I'm wondering why. I guess the graphics are computed with no hardware acceleration.

Which graphic drivers are being used ? I guess 32-bit emulated OpenGL is relying on software-based "drivers", but I cannot see why and neither can I see how to change that.

Code:

qdii@seepid ~ $ eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1]   xorg-x11 *

Your science is more than welcome :)

I hope that when you speak of drivers, you mean that for intel, i.e., xf86-video-intel (and not nvidia-drivers). The 3D hardware acceleration depends also on mesa version (which supplies libGL.so). I am not very sure how it works for intel, but for nvidia, the 32-bit libGL.so is 'hardware accelerated'. (Example, I get 120fps in doom3 at 1280x1024, high settings, on my notebook with Nvidia 9800M GS). The only issue might be an older version of mesa in the emul-linux-x86-xlibs you have. (Here is a possibility. Download some relevant packages like mesa from 32-bit Ubuntu latest, i.e., 9.10 Karmic, and 'dpkg --extract' out the 32-bit libGL.so from it and try putting it in your system (just as you did from nvidia-drivers). Just do it carefully as you did by keeping some backups. And hope that there are not too many version dependencies.)

There is really not much to it. I guess 'eselect opengl' just sets the relevant libGL.so links in /usr/lib/. Just make sure you libGL.so files in /usr/lib/ (and /usr/lib32/) are pointing to those in /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/ (and /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/). That is all you can do and hope that the mesa version supports hardware accel for your intel graphics card.

And the other suggestion. If this is not on a notebook and you really want to play doom3 (and other 3d games) and you have a motherboard with pci-e slot, get a decent graphics card. I would be tempted to suggest you a Nvidia card (and sincerely so), but ATI cards should also do good in short and long run. Also would be happy to know your current cpu/gpu specs.

Hello.
Yeah, it is crystal clear to me that I shouldn't use nvidia cards' drivers on my intel. Makes perfect sense.
Your explanations are once again very instructive !

If I understood correctly, mesa, which is an implementation of OpenGL, can be compiled with or without hardware acceleration. I guess mine is compiled without (despite "equery u mesa" showing that it was compiled with support for intel module).

I tried to unpack Ubuntu jaunty latest version of mesa, and used symlinks to have /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1 points toward my file.
That did not change anything. I was puzzled. I launched doom3, and opened a console, used "lsof -p ... | grep GL", and I saw that it was still using the former library (I mean, my mesa). Playing rough, I renamed the ancient library and symlinked the file in use to the Ubuntu's libGL file. (I'm not sure this is clear) : What I mean is that I forced doom3 to use the library.

Relaunching doom, I bumped into THE segmentation fault.
Therefore, I think actual Ubuntu is based on a former mesa implementation.

Something caught my attention : I have mesa version 7.5.2 ( I think ), but mesa website indicates that 7.6 was out since September 2009. The changelog shows significant modifications on i915 & i965 drivers, namely on stability. Digging into it, I found that x11 overlays contained this version.
Right now I'm emerging it to see if it gets better.

If it fails, I guess I will try to download this mesa source code and build the 32-bit library myself.
I keep you posted :)

erm I guess emerging will only build the 64-bit drivers...

WHAT A CRUSADE.
And still a failure.

Okay so definitely using latest mesa was a bit complicated : when emerging from the overlay, it would only install the 64 bit drivers.
To make a very long story short, I created a local overlay, modified the ebuild so that it builds only the 32 bit drivers.
In the end it worked, and it even built some new /usr/lib32/dri/i915_dri.so. Unfortunately, launching doom3 would not give better performance.

So I guess my configure is not the best ever.
I'm gonna try to see deeper

Eh, I thought you are doing it for fun :). But seriously, you should get a decent graphics card as I mentioned above, or finish it in Windows if you haven't played it before.

While you are at it, can you also give wine a try. Doom3 performs almost equally well under wine. Although I am guessing wine still might use 32-bit libs (and besides the rumor that wine has nvidia stamped all over it ;)).

Just to check that your 3d is actually doing okay, does compiz / kde4 compositing work okay? How about some lightweight 3d games like neverball/torcs/chromium. (World of Goo?). Nexuiz etc?

Hello there,
you are totally right when you say I'm doing it for fun ! for that, and for experience too.
Now I guess there's something wrong with mesa installation. As my use flag list contains "multilib", not only should it build the 64-bit drivers, but the 32-bit aswell, right ? I'll try and contact the package maintainers about that.

Wine is really crap when it comes to opengl on my computer.
-> you are right to doubt about its using 32-bit libraries : I made a little test : "wine war3.exe -opengl" , and tried "listof" on a terminal, and Bingo! , lib32 opengl.

Games using 64-bit opengl : quake3 and unreal tournament 2004 are running without a glitch, and so does chromium.

So, I guess we could sum it up like that :
My lib32 opengl.so is using a software renderer, and the lib64 a hardware one. right ?

Well, at least from what you say, that is what it seems - that the 32-bit libGL.so is not accelerated. What more can I say? May be try out a 32-bit live version of a recent distro (say Ubuntu 9.10) to see if the frame rates are good, and if so, wait for the emul-linux-x86-xlibs to get an updated mesa version. I wish there were some 32-bit glxgears and glxinfo bundled with the emul packages for some easy info :). (May be you can try nicking those binaries from a 32-bit system and running it on your machine.)

The thing I would be very surprised then is if things run fine on a windows guest inside a virtual machine supporting directx/opengl (like latest vmware or virtualbox). (I guess the calls are still made to a 32-bit libGL.so.)
