Recently tried different debian versions. Etch, Lenny, and Squeeze. Etch had a number of issues that haven't improved with age. Lenny was almost okay in that the fbdev driver actually worked. Squeeze seems to have fixed problems with the radeon driver. Not sure if the fix was in the driver, xorg, or the kernel. Has anyone seen a changelog that shows when the problem was handled?

With Etch using autoconfiguration gave me incorrect monitor and card settings and I didn't feel like recreating a working xorg.conf based on outdated web pages. Lenny also had incorrect monitor settings and wanted to use "vga" as the driver but worked with "fbdev". Correcting the monitor settings at least allowed me to kill xorg when using the "radeon" driver, otherwise the screen was black. Squeeze gave a working Xorg with no xorg.conf file at all and uses the radeon driver. Granted that DRI is automatically disabled and XAA used instead of EXA.

I used Debian because I didn't want to spend a month compiling everything from source. I'm not even sure I could find the Gentoo files from 2005.

I've been playing around with the Xorg configuration files. Using 'Xorg -config' results in a black screen where Xorg needs to be killed to escape. Using 'startx' with the xorg.conf file in the usual location works. I guess part of the problem occurs because there is a message to test the xorg.conf.new file using 'Xorg -config /root/xorg.conf.new' and that is not true. You should test by setting startup to be in text mode rather than graphical and create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

The only significant difference between the working and non-working logs when I copy the rather sparse config from the logs is:
Working:
drmOpenDevice: result is 6
Non-working:
drmOpenDevice: result is 8

Using the 'Xorg -configure' file has the same results with startx and 'Xorg -config'. Works using startx with drmOpenDevice (6). Fails using 'Xorg -config /root/xorg.conf.new' with drmOpenDevice (8).

Not sure what that means yet.

I've just setup the Gentoo PPC system on an iBook G4 using 2008.0 and the truth is, it was faster than I expected. I had the whole computer done in a day. Don't let that stop you from using Gentoo. :)
