Hi,

Installed the dropbox-0.6.1 in a local overlay and have emerged it. At work computer I then ran...

Code:

dropbox start -i

which download the install, and then allowed me to setup things up with my username and account. Even stuck a few files in ~/Dropbox ready to sync.

Got home and hoped to be able to do exactly the same at home (both systems on ARCH="~amd64"), but find that upon running 'dropbox start -i' the download completes, but then the subsequent configuration/installation fails to start. The dialog box for the download appears, gets to 100% and then disappears and the command prompt from which I invoked it doesn't report any errors it all it just says "Done"...

Code:

$ dropbox start -i
Done!
$

It downloads fine as ~/dropbox-dist is present...

Code:

$ ls -al .dropbox-dist/
total 46660

..and this matches that on my work computer as I thought I could try circumventing this by rsync-ing the work install would sort things out, but there are no differences...

Code:

$ rsync -avz work:~/.dropbox-dist/* ~/.dropbox-dist/.
Password:

sent 31 bytes  received 2370 bytes  533.56 bytes/sec
total size is 48201100  speedup is 20075.43 (DRY RUN)

So I'm scuppered as to why its not moving on to the initial install/configuration?

Tried to cheat and rsync ~/.dropbox/* from work with the intention of then changing the host on my home computer through the config, but that didn't work either as upon trying to start dropbox it still thinks it isn't installed?

Advice of things to try appreciated,

slack

Have you tried to run the daemon manually?

Code:
~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd

It shows the icon tray and tries to open a browser (or print the url in the console if it cant find one) to register your pc with your account.

Just gave it a go and am getting permissions denied on something. The bug mentions some problems with the libraries, but they look ok to me (the user is in the dropbox group btw)...

Code:

$ .dropbox-dist/dropboxd
bash: .dropbox-dist/dropboxd: /bin/bash: bad interpreter: Permission denied
neil@darwin ~ $ ls -l .dropbox-dist/dropboxd

Thats weird, by chance do you have /home in a different partition with noexec in the mount options?

Try running it with:
Code:
sh .dropbox-dist/dropboxd

It is indeed on a separate partition but the noexec option isn't included in the fstab entry...

Code:
/dev/sda5      /home      ext3      noatime,rw,users   0 0

Whats stranger still is that on my work computer where the install went fine, /home is also on a separate partition with the same options as above.

Just tried remotely with mixed success...
Code:

$ sh .dropbox-dist/dropboxd
.dropbox-dist/dropboxd: line 3: /home/neil/.dropbox-dist/dropbox: Permission denied
.dropbox-dist/dropboxd: line 3: /home/neil/.dropbox-dist/dropbox: Success

All very strange?

i tried the same steps as you (rsync included) but i cant reproduce your problem :? , you can run another scripts in your partition?

Code:
cat >> sample-script << EOF
#!/bin/bash
echo "script success"
EOF
chmod +x sample-script
./sample-script

Maybe installing the daemon part manually can resolve your problem:

Code:
rm -r .dropbox-dist
wget http://www.getdropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86_64
tar xzf dropbox-lnx.x86_64-*.tar.gz
./dropbox-dist/dropboxd

Ah ha! I think you may have hit the nail on the head there...

Code:

~tmp $ cat >> sample-script << EOF
> #!/bin/bash
> echo "script success"
> EOF
~/tmp $ chmod +x sample-script
~/tmp $ ./sample-script
bash: ./sample-script: /bin/bash: bad interpreter: Permission denied

But why is this, I've had the above options for mounting /home partitions for I don't know how long?

Code:

 $ ls -al /home/
total 28
drwxr-xr-x  4 root root  4096 Oct  2 15:12 .
drwxr-xr-x 20 root root  4096 Nov  6 09:00 ..
-rw-r--r--  1 root root     0 Sep 10 01:30 .keep
drwx------  2 root root 16384 Oct  1 14:56 lost+found
drwxr-xr-x 35 neil neil  4096 Nov 13 07:41 neil

Same error, likely by virtue of not being able to run executables in my home dir, so I went ahead and changed the /etc/fstab entry to...

Code:

/dev/sda5      /home      ext3      defaults   0 0

and its installed fine.

Thanks for the help trouble shooting, much appreciated, would have (and have been) scratching my head for ages!
