Hi,

I tried to compile a new kernel (from gentoo-sources) using both 2.4.27 or 2.4.29 and they both fail the same way. I still have 2.4.24 which does run. I used "make oldconfig" from the old .config file, so the setup should be quite reasonable.

On boot, I get a warning that the mesh scsi driver should get updated and then a sequence of of exceptions and sync errors on the scsi bus and the kernel halts boot with no root partition found.

The mesh scsi is the internal scsi bus.

The machine I run on is a 9500 powermac, thus an OldWorld machine. Is somebody running a reasonably recent kernel on such an old faithful iron? Is maybe some new configuration parameter needed in the kernel?

Thanks,
Riccardo

I can't really help you without a copy of the information that the kernel gives when it dies. If you could provide a photo of the error message, or type it out if you're patient, it would help us debug the problem.

The failures are multiple, possibly related. One error after the other during boot.

Here the first. it clearly says mesh_abort() after detecting the disk and warning that the driver needs to be updated.

after a while it says

mesh_host_reset
Device offlined - not ready after error recovery

then:

READ CAPACITY FAILED

and a series of errors "rejecting I/O to offline device"

then I get a second diver error
Driver 'sr' needs updating - please use bus_type methods

then booting whil continue until VFS will not open <NULL> no root gets found and the machine reboots.

I took pictures for a more detailed descritption, but it is apaprently not possible to upload to this forum.

It looks similar to this, at least many of the errors, it dies worse no me apparently and I get the second error on the 'sr' driver.

But in 2007 I had a working kernel... 2.6.21 was the last one for me that I tried... then i did not uprgade for quite some time,
