I have both Gentoo and Mac OS X installed on my Powerbook G4.
I'm at the step were I'm trying to install the GUI. I have choosen Gnome since that's what I'm the most familiar with. (Even though I know it does not make much of a difference. )
My /etc/make.conf file looks like this
Code:
#These settings were set by the catalys build script that automatically
#built this stage.
#Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example.
CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=powerpc -mtune=powerpc -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=powerpc -mtune=powerpc -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe"
#Warning: Changing your CHOST is not something that should be done lightly.
#Please consult http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml before changing.
CHOST="powerpc-unkown-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=powerpc -mtune=powerpc -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe"
#Use the same settings for both variables
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
USE="-qt3 -qt4 -arts -kde X dbus gtk gnome hal avahi"

I didn't realize this till now but i have CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS twice. Should I delete one of them? or will it not matter?
Anyways, now when i run "emerge gnome"
I get
Code:
!!! Your current profile is deprecated and not supported anymore.
!!! Please updrage to the following profile if possible:
              default/linux/powerpc/ppc32/10.0

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy ">=sys-auth/pambase-20090430[consolekit,-gnome-keyring]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
-sys-auth/pambase-20090620.1-r1 (Change USE: +consolekit)
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gdm-2.20.10-r2" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-2.26.3" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome" [argument])

I don't know what I need to do to get Gnome to install.

This should fix the profile problem but not the real problem
Code:
eselect profile set default/linux/powerpc/ppc32/10.0

The real problem is that you need to do what the error tells you.
Quote:

!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
-sys-auth/pambase-20090620.1-r1 (Change USE: +consolekit)

This says enable the consolekit use flag and rebuild pambase.

I'm still getting used to gentoo.
How would i enable consolekit?
Like this?
Code:
USE="-qt3 -qt4 -arts -kde X dbus gtk gnome hal avahi consolekit"

and how do i rebuild pambase?

yes, although you can do it in a per package basis too.
Maybe you want to activate a profile, lots of usefull USEs will be activated for you by default.

just reinstall it : emerge -av1 pambase and you´ll see pambase will now have consolekit marked in green, which means it is now activated.

Make sure you know what you are doing, check the documentation in case you have any doubts.

cheers

By doing "eselect profile set default/linux/powerpc/ppc32/10.0" I would be selecting a profile right?
I'm sorry, I'm still new to Gentoo and to having run alot of linux by command.

yes but if you look into eselect profile list you´ll see you also have a desktop and a server profile, which will activate several things for you.
If you are going to use it as a desktop maybe the desktop profile is what you are looking but be advised that it will activate LOTS of USEs, i mean, it will activate gnome and kde by default f.ex.

no need to apologize for anything, if you have questions just ask but make sure you read and understand the docs first, probably you will find the answer there ;-)

cheers

Ok, So I'm still working on getting gnome to install. (I have been able to work on this recently due to school.)
So far I have done:
Code:
eselect profile set default/linux/powerpc/ppc32/10.0/desktop

Then I ran
Code:
emerge -av1 pambase

I got a blocked package. I read the blocked package page and found a solution to fix this. So that fully installed.
But when I try to install
Code:
emerge gnome

I get:
[nomerge ] net-print/foomatic-filters-ppds-20070501
[nomerge ] net-print/foomatic-filters-3.0.20080507 USE="cups"
[ebuild N ] net-print/cups-1.3.11-r1 USE="X acl avahi dbus jpeg ldap pam perl png ppds python ssl tiff -gnutls - java -kerberos -php -samba -slp -static -xinetd -zeroconf" LINGUAS="-de -en -es -et -fr -he -id -it -ja -pl -sv -zh_TW"

[ebuild N ] x11-libs/gtk+-2.16.6 USE=cups jpeg tiff -debug -doc -jpeg2k -test -vimsyntax -xinerama"

* Note that circular dependencies can often be avoided by temporarily
* disbaling USE flags that trigger optional dependencies.

I tried looking for a solution for this online but I was unable to find one.
