This comes from pro-audio overlay, hence it's unsupported software. Moreover it's masked (~arch) but I'd like to install it because the older, stable version requires yet another version of Python which I don't want to install.

Code:
Csound installation has been successfully completed.
Before running Csound, make sure that the following environment
variables are set:
  OPCODEDIR64=/usr/lib/csound/plugins64
  CSSTRNGS=/usr/share/locale
Csound can be uninstalled by running /usr/bin/uninstall-csound5

yep : you must disable sandbox to emerge csound, beecause "install.py" calls /sbin/ldconfig

Code:
FEATURES=-sandbox emerge -av csound

Code:
FEATURES=-sandbox emerge -av csound

worked for me in the past, but the current csound seems be have something else wrong. But that now fails with:
Code:
>>> Failed to emerge media-sound/csound-5.12.1-r1, Log file:

>>>  '/var/tmp/portage/media-sound/csound-5.12.1-r1/temp/build.log'

 * Messages for package media-sound/csound-5.12.1-r1:

 * ERROR: media-sound/csound-5.12.1-r1 failed:
 *   scons failed!
 *
 * Call stack:
 *     ebuild.sh, line  56:  Called src_compile
 *   environment, line 4928:  Called die
 * The specific snippet of code:
 *       CC="$(tc-getCC)" CXX="$(tc-getCXX)" customCCFLAGS="$CFLAGS -fno-strict-aliasing" customCXXFLAGS="$CXXFLAGS -fno-strict-aliasing" ${sconsconf} || die "scons failed!"

has anyone else ran into this problem?

Yes I have. The problem is discussed on http://csound.1045644.n5.nabble.com/Build-failure-with-5-12-1-td2854639.html but the solutions do not work.

Sounds like you are getting close to a solution though. Are you still using the 5.10 patched from fedora? Or are you pursuing getting 5.12 to work? Is there somewhere I can get those modified ebuilds you are working with? It seems the attachment luis jure spoke of is no longer accessible. I'd like to pitch in as much as possible, as I really hate hearing people call Gentoo 'broken'.
