Just upgraded to app-emulation/virtualbox-ose-3.1.0, and the CLI 'savestate' command that worked before now fails with:
Code:
Error: failed to save machine state. No error message available!

Details:
I am running a small VM as a BIND master. The VM runs headless, started as follows:
Code:
/usr/bin/VBoxHeadless -s gentoo-dns &
[1] 18237
ipic@ian2 ~ $ VirtualBox Headless Interface 3.1.0_OSE
(C) 2008-2009 Sun Microsystems, Inc.
All rights reserved.

The way I like to work is to suspend (savestate) the VM during shutdown, and then restart on boot up using a custom /etc/init.d script I created. The savestate command produces the following output following the upgrade to 3.1.0:
Code:
ipic@ian2 ~ $ /usr/bin/VBoxManage controlvm gentoo-dns savestate
VirtualBox Command Line Management Interface Version 3.1.0_OSE
(C) 2005-2009 Sun Microsystems, Inc.
All rights reserved.

0%...10%...20%...30%...40%...50%...60%...70%...80%...90%...
Error: failed to save machine state. No error message available!

Commands are run as the user owning the VM: eg
Code:
/bin/su - ipic -c "/usr/bin/VBoxManage controlvm gentoo-dns savestate"

If I start the VM from the GUI control screen, and use the "savestate" option on shutdown, the save works OK and the VM restarts again OK using the VBoxHeadless command as above.

Plenty of space on the disk partition I'm using:
Code:
ipic@ian2 ~ $ df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
...
/dev/mapper/vg00-vbox
                       70G   58G   13G  83% /vbox
...

And the permissions all look OK (unchanged from before upgrade):
Code:
ipic@ian2 /vbox/ipic/machines/gentoo-dns $ ls -lh
total 24K
-rw------- 1 ipic users 4.5K 2009-12-05 15:01 gentoo-dns.xml
drwxr-xr-x 2 ipic users  168 2009-12-05 15:02 Logs
drwxr-xr-x 2 ipic users   48 2009-12-05 15:01 Snapshots

Anyone else seeing this in Virtualbox 3.1.0?
Regards
Ian

Thanks for the response.
I don't think this is the same issue - their problem seems to be about a guests state being incorrect after saving. However, I used the information to dig a bit further, and I think I can show that this is a new issue with VBoxHeadless at 3.1.0. It all works great if I just use the GUI console.

I've posted a VirtualBox forum thread about it here:
