PostPosted: Sat Dec 19, 2009 12:43 pm    Post subject: Gentoo SPARC64 Firefox Java and Flash Plugins Reply with quote

I have a SunFire Server I'm using as a router and I have it setup with GDM for XDMCP login so I can use Xming on my desktop to get a gui. I am trying to use Firefox to run tests on Speedtest.net and Pingtest.net when my internet is having problems. However I need Java and Flash plugins for firefox to do this. I have followed instructions on Gentoo-wiki for Java on sparc and installed a version of icedtea6-bin 1.3. I couldnt use the 1.4.1 ebuild from Bugzilla because the distfiles are no longer available on gentoo mirrors and I couldnt find them elsewhere. Flash I have downloaded the Solaris Sparc Plugin and the Linux plugin and dont know if Im just putting it in the wrong spot or if there is just no way to make it work I placed the libflashplayer.so in ~/.mozilla/plugins I have also looked into trying an emulator but can't get them to work. So my needs are, a Firefox Flash and Java plugin for sparc, or and emulator to run x86/x86_64 firefox on my sparc.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

In the java-overlay there are ebuilds for icedtea6 version 1.5.3-r1 and 1.6.2-r1,
I'd give those a try.

For flash, there are two open source implementations. Don't know of their status.

You may have better luck with your question in the Gentoo for Sparc forum, near the bottom of the forum list.

That being said, if you get the java plugin from the 1.7 versions in the java-experimental overlay, they might work better for you.

There is already a 1.8 ebuild in java-experimental and also a live ebuild.

#gentoo-java @ freenode is probably the best place to get help with build problems of icedtea6 on gentoo.

Not build, ebuild. Ebuild is an instruction set to fetch, build and install a package including dependencies in script form. The basis of package management in gentoo so to speek.

Java overlay page:

Well I used subversion to checkout the overlay and added it to the overlay section in make.conf but I cant get it to merge because of a missing keyword even though i added it to package.keywords

missing keyword means you have to add ** instead of ~sparc

The icedtea ebuilds there are quite old. You may have better luck with the sun-java-1.7 ebuilds. They come with a native plugin.

What are you talking about? The icedtea6 and icedtea(7) ebuilds from the java-overlay have both been updated within the last 2 weeks. They both work well and are probably the best bet for getting java working on uncommon archs.
