PeaZip 2.9.beta was released today, the new version improves the file manager and updates the backend binaries to FreeArc 0.60 and UPX 3.04.
http://peazip.sourceforge.net/index-next.html

Alongside for testing, the beta version is meant to give time to people willing to contribute a translation (that I thanks in advance!) to provide language files to be included in 2.9 packages.

The guide for translation is available in this package: https://sourceforge.net/projects/pea...s.zip/download
Newer translations are made available, as soon as they are provided, at: https://sourceforge.net/projects/peazip/files/ in "PeaZip translations" group.

seems the only ebuilds available are for the binary - https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=178716

2nd to last comment from "Fabio Bonfante" on that bug explains why. So no source ebuild for any revision atm :P

Stumbled over this when trying to find info on FreeArc (It sounds like it'll blow 7zip and rar out of the water, but it's odd as I never heard of it before! It seems to have popped out of nowhere, and there is very little 3rd party data on it :S Also there is no ebuild...)

Gonna try it out with the FreeArc cruncher on my directory dumps as my diff+7zip trick got too unwieldy on them (Although it's still unbeaten for the 80GB+ disk images ).

I especially like the fact it can use a 1GB dictionary without needing over 10GB RAM (*cough*7ZIP*cough*64BITONLY*cough*) and can optimize its algorithms depending on filetype!

RAR'd they were about 28GB (rar a -m5 -md4096 -dh)
7zip got it down to 17GB (7z a -mx9 -ms=e -sd27)

It'll be interesting to see if peazip/freearc can beat that. Theoretically I'd expect a best-case of around 6-7GB if it really can use a 1GB dictionary due to the massive but identical files in these directory dumps.

RAR and 7zip get screwed because their dictionaries are limited to 4MB and 64MB respectively which is nowhere near enough to take advantage of the redundancy in the dumps...
