Hi! I am new to Gentoo; installed it yesterday for the first time, using the minimal install CD. Everything went well (as far as I can tell ;-)). I thought it would be crazy difficult, but the handbook did an excellent job of guiding me through the whole process. ^_^

I got a ruby red iMac G3/450 off of eBay for the purpose of tinkering with Linux. Because of the limited specs (256 Mb memory, 20 GB HD) and for other reasons, I want to run it in text-mode only. The only problem is, the current screen dimensions are 128 colums by 48 rows, and the resulting font is kind of small for my old eyes. I would like to use a larger font... maybe not as large as 80x25, but that would be a start.

I googled for a solution, of course; apparently there are ways to do this when you use grub/lilo, but since my machine uses yaboot, that does not apply here. I also tried downloading/compiling some tools, like fbset (I get a blank screen whenever I try to change the resolution), or svgalib (does not compile). So far, no luck.

So my question is obviously, is there a way to set this on a G3?

(I use kernel 2.6.31-gentoo-r6.)

Thanks,

A bit more info. I keep seeing the following in /var/log/syslog:

Jan 9 12:12:30 mesartim kernel: aty128fb 0000:00:10.0: enabling device (0086 -> 0087)
Jan 9 12:12:30 mesartim kernel: aty128fb 0000:00:10.0: Invalid ROM contents
Jan 9 12:12:30 mesartim kernel: aty128fb: Invalid ROM signature 8181 should be 0xaa55
Jan 9 12:12:30 mesartim kernel: aty128fb: BIOS not located, guessing timings.
Jan 9 12:12:30 mesartim kernel: aty128fb: Rage128 PR PRO PCI [chip rev 0x1] 8M 64-bit SDR SGRAM (2:1)
Jan 9 12:12:30 mesartim kernel: Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 128x48
Jan 9 12:12:30 mesartim kernel: fb0: ATY Rage128 frame buffer device on Rage128 PR PRO PCI
Jan 9 12:12:30 mesartim kernel: vga16fb: initializing
Jan 9 12:12:30 mesartim kernel: vga16fb: mapped to 0x000a0000
Jan 9 12:12:30 mesartim kernel: fb1: VGA16 VGA frame buffer device

Googling for this brings up some pages but still doesn't tell me much... In any case, Gentoo keeps falling back to 128x48. Tweaking the 'video=' setting in yaboot.conf does not seem to have any effect, unless I change it to something like, 'video=aty128fb:800x600-75', in which case the screen goes blank at some point during the boot process, and the machine seems to hang. (The same thing happens when I use fbset to set the screen to a certain resolution, even the one that is supposedly current.)

Does this look familiar to anyone here? :(

(Other than the font issue, Gentoo is running great, by the way...)

Thanks,

--Hans
