I'm a little stuck on how to get Etoile up and running. I'm up to the point where I've grabbed the Etoile tarball, but when I run make in the root of the extracted Etoile folder, it says: "common.make -- no such file or directory", "aggregate.make -- no such file or directory."

Here's what I've done:
Installed the Gnustep overlay: http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/gnustep
Emerged gnustep-make, gnustep-base, gnustep-gui, gnustep-back, libpng, zlib, oniguruma, dbus, hal, startup-notification, xscreensaver, llvm, gmp, taglib, and libmp4v2.

I did try to emerge Etoile, but the emerge took less than 30 seconds. It said it was installing it, but it didn't look like anything was actually done.

Getting ahead of myself: After the make (stuck here), make install, ./setup.sh, Frameworks/CoreObject/setup-coreobject.sh, do I just stick etoile.desktop into /usr/share/xsessions and I'm ready to use the environment?

When you type "emerge etoile" what is the output? Also, post your "emerge --info".

Moved from Desktop Environments to Unsupported Software.

Overlays are not formally supported - thats not to say you won't get help in Unsupported Software

Etoile is just a meta-package, so the output you give is normal if in fact all the dependencies are satisfied. It has many dependencies, so if they were not installed when you installed it, something is horribly broken.

What is you uninstall etoile ("emerge -u etoile") and all the gnustep packages you specified, then what does "emerge -ip etoile" say?
