This is somehow related to the 3d open-source ati driver thread but it doesn't quite fit in there any more since it is only about the HDMI audio output of the driver. It might not be related to the driver but some system settings (at least I hope so since mplayer works fine).

I'm using HDMI sound output with the latest xf86-video-ati drivers (KMS enabled with vanilla sources 2.6.33-r3). I know this is kind of experimental but it works great with mplayer. That is why I was surprised to find out that it doesn't work with any other application with sound output:
I'm getting a few seconds of terrible noise and then the sound hangs (still repeating one never ending tone).
Restarting alsa with the initscript doesn't help and the module snd_hda_codec_atihtml can't be un/reloaded because it is used. Only a system restart helps.

How can it be that the output in mplayer works but every other application I tried (flash in firefox, ffplay, xbmc, stepmania, performous,...) would crash the driver?
How does mplayer work differently?
Can I do something about it or must I simply wait a driver update?

Edit in case someone still reads this:
Since this doesn't work with the newest kernel version 2.6.33-rc4 either, I filed a bug report here.
