as far as I know guest-additions should make an .iso that I mount as a CD in the guest OS to install the ethernet (and possibly other) drivers. but Gentoo doesn't have any .iso file when I emerge guest-additions? there's some dæmon that fails to start, and that's about it. help?

I kind of need ethernet in my Windows XP installation.

That was also what i expected, as i've installed the guest-aditions successfully few weeks ago.
But there's definitely no .iso to mount to activate the guest-aditions, like others guys showed me earlier.

As far as i remeber, i've started Windows in the Virtual-Box, an then there came up a Window which asked me something like:
Guest-additions(or new software) has been found, do want to activate/install.
After doing this, i've got an hint to restart Virtual-Box what i had done.

After that, i noticed that anywhere in one of the pull down menues of the Window of Virtual-Box, there is now a check-box to activate or deactivate the guest-additions.
The usual .iso entry to load it doesn't seem to appear anywhere.

Eventually i could take a look later where it is precisely, if it is not concrete enough for you, when i'm home on a real OS (Gentoo-forever!)

Regards, Andy.

If I understand you correctly you want to install guest additions on a windows XP client running on your gentoo host?

AFAIK the virtualbox-guest-additions package installs the guest additions to make gentoo a guest for virtualbox.

In the graphical User interface for virtualbox in the devices section you can activate/deactivate the Guest additions "CD" for the guest system. This is part of the virtualbox-bin and most likely virtualbox packages.

I think you need to emerge virtualbox-bin with the additions use flag. And then under the machine settings, you need to set it to use the guest additions iso as its CD Image. Then when it is booting up, hit Host+D (or up at the top... I think its Machine --> Mount Guest Additions, or something like that).

Then, when windows XP loads, you open up My Computer, and open the guest additions folder. Then install it. Pretty straightforward.
