Is it possible to move a process/job from one machine to another using virtual machine such as vmware or virtualbox?

I am thinking the procedure would be:
1) setup a virtual environment in virtualbox
2) start the process in the virtual environment
3) freeze/suspend the whole virtual environment and package it
4) send the package to a new host with similar hardware/software setup
5) resume the whole virtual environment and continue the process

Is this doable? If so, can I script the whole flow so it can be automated?

TIA for the help!

I don't see why not, though (disclaimer) I haven't tried. As long as the client OS can suspend, you should be able to move a complete snapshot of it to another virtual machine (though the VM and it's configuration should be identical *). Scripting it is probably possible too, as long as you can somehow pass a message from the host to the client telling it to suspend. You may need a script running in the client too, to receive this message.

*Addendum: If the VM virtualises everything, the hosts themselves can be completely different.

Never used vmware, virtualbox, or any other emulators except for wine. Which one you think I will have higher chance to success?

It's been a few years since I used vmware, and I only tried out virtualbox a few times. Google a bit for <VMname> and hibernate. I think vmware would be a safe bet, but virtualbox may work just as well. I seem to remember vmware has a suspend feature, where the guest OS doesn't even need to know it is being suspended.

Either way, the simplest would probably be to try out both. Just create a tiny test image for the guest.
