This was discussed somewhat on the other thread that I created. Since we are talking about a specific thing... I thought I should make a new thread for it.

As far as I know, currently, there are only some ebuilds that can be installed. Here is a link: https://bugs.gentoo.org/257207

When I get time, I'll see what I can do. Currently, I'm swamped in too many other projects. So, until I can do some research and try to break my system... maybe some of you guys can do the same? ;)

Really? I did not know that. The ebuilds were just posted online like in November or something of 2009.

Anyhow, we were talking about it here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-810933.html

If sreadahead for gentoo is dead... are there any alternatives? Is there any way I can get readahead to work?

Well, there's preload. But all it does for me is slow down the boot process a good deal (despite being ioniced -c3!)

As far as I know, preload does not help with the bootup process at all. In fact, it slows it down... as you said. ;) Preload is supposed to preload packages that are used on the computer whereas readahead preloads bootfiles... I think.

Well, it could in theory speed up booting since it preloads components while the boot process is in a CPU-heavy stage. But since preload doesn't seem to care whether it is ioniced, it blocks other IO. So there's that :/
