This is the problem:

I have 2 desktops: one on my home, the other at work. I'd like to synchronize some folders between these two guys on a daily basis. I have an 8 GB pendrive to do it.

Most tools around work by creating a mirror of the folders on the intermediary (in this case the pendrive). So in practice, those tools simply "copy" the folders to the pendrive, and from it to the next computer. I don't want this to happen, because the folder's contents are much larger than the pendrive capacity.

Direct network connection between the 2 desktops is not possible.

So what I need is a tool that works with directory repositories, so that only what has changed in every desktop get's copied to the pendrive.

I've been using syrep ( http://0pointer.de/lennart/projects/syrep/ ) to do this. This tool would be perfect, except for the fact that it's kinda buggy, and hasn't worked as expected. To make this worse, looks like it's been out of development for some years.

Does anyone know a backup tool that I could use in this context? I've googled a lot, and found nothing.

Thanks!

I think rsync should do what you want. It will make the changes on each machine to the pendrive and keep them in sync.

*edit* or, if I'd read what you wanted after coffee, I wouldn't have been so wrong.

@gfaccin, I think what you're looking for is rdiff-backup. :)

Hi there!

Thanks for the replies!

I'm looking at rdiff-backup (didn't know it, thanks!) , but it's not clear to me that it would really do what I need. It appears that it requires all the data to stay at the same time on the pendrive, which would not work in my case. If I'm wrong, please correct me!

Any other ideas, perhaps?
