Hello,

According to the Changelog (http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/RecentChanges), HAL support seems to have been dropped as of March 1 2010, as announced a few weeks ago (and there is no use flag for the xorg-server-9999 ebuild in the x11 overlay). As a result I ended up with no keyboard/mouse under X and had to put the keyboard in raw mode (Alt+SysRq+r) to switch to a console.
Apparently one needs to set the udev USE flag for xorg-server-9999 if they want to have input working again. Moreover I had to emerge xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-keyboard to get them to work. xf86-input-evdev seems to do nothing now (I assume it only works with hald?).

Moreover, there is some confusion now with X configuration. Gentoo uses the /etc/X11 directory for xorg.conf and friends, whereas it is now recommended that /etc/xorg.conf.d/ be used for distro specific configuration, and users can add their bits into xorg.conf (which according to Fedora's wiki which x.org developers point to, should be located under /etc instead of /etc/X11... go figure). Anyway X worked for me with an empty xorg.conf.d directory.

Yes. HAL is in the process of being phased out as it has apparently become very difficult to maintain.

Anyone knows what happened to the VIDEO_CARDS and INPUT_DEVICES use flags of this ebuild?

Those are now part of the xorg-drivers ebuilds, both in the tree and in the x11 overlay.

You can stick this in xorg.conf to get the old grab-all-input behaviour back:
Code:
Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Keyboard Defaults"
    MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
    Driver "evdev"
    Option "XkbLayout" "??"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Mouse Defaults"
    MatchIsPointer "yes"
    Driver "evdev"
EndSection

OK, so if I want the new method I have to remove evdev and add keyboard and mouse to the INPUT_DEVICES variable?
