Hi there,

I've been using gentoo on my ppc for a while now and I've not managed to get a splash screen for my boot (it just takes to long to setup busy box and fbsplash manually). I would like to use genkernel but as I understand it there are some issues with this and ppc.

i would appreciate it if you would let me know how to go about using genkernel for my system.

One thing you have to change is the profile. default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop is for amd64 machines, not ppc32.

Code:
nixnut@clueless ~ $ eselect profile list
Available profile symlink targets:
  [1]   default/linux/powerpc/ppc32/10.0
  [2]   default/linux/powerpc/ppc32/10.0/desktop *
  [3]   default/linux/powerpc/ppc32/10.0/developer
  [4]   default/linux/powerpc/ppc32/10.0/server
  [5]   default/linux/powerpc/ppc64/10.0/32bit-userland
  [6]   default/linux/powerpc/ppc64/10.0/32bit-userland/desktop
  [7]   default/linux/powerpc/ppc64/10.0/32bit-userland/developer
  [8]   default/linux/powerpc/ppc64/10.0/32bit-userland/server
  [9]   hardened/linux/powerpc/ppc32/10.0
  [10]  hardened/linux/powerpc/ppc64/10.0/32bit-userland

You don't have to use genkernel to create an initrd with a splash image. See http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Fbsplash

Well spotted. I do in fact have a PPC profile:

[2] default/linux/powerpc/ppc32/10.0/desktop *

but I think i was rushing and accidentally copied the profile list for my AMD64 machine that I was sshed into.
