PostPosted: Mon Apr 19, 2010 9:32 pm    Post subject: [Solved] No Keyboard or mouse after X upgrade Reply with quote

Hi,

I upgraded from xorg-server 1.7 to 1.7.6 (stable in portage as of today).

I have tried starting X using my xorg.conf and with no xorg.conf at all -- both yield the same results: I get the kdm screen, but as soon as I touch the mouse, everything locks up.

I have read the output after my X upgrade and all the posts regarding this issue -- and I have tried all that they have said, namely, I rebuilt all my X drivers (several times over now). This is not working.

I have updated all my drivers thusly:
Code:
emerge -av1 $(qlist -I -C x11-drivers)
and
Code:
emerge portage-utils; qlist -I -C x11-drivers/

I have evdev in my kernel:
Code:
CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=y

I have updated my kernel to the latest stable version: linux-2.6.32-gentoo-r7

I have re-emerged my nvidia-drivers.

I have the following lines in my make.conf:
Code:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"
VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia nv vesa"

I have remerged hal and x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev manually. I have done a revdep-rebuild -i, and the system is consistent.

Nothing works. I don't know what I am missing here.

Like I said, I have tried this with and without an xorg.conf (and using nvidia and nv drivers), but, fwiw, here is my xorg.conf (with comments removed):

How do you know that X locks up and that you haven't simply got broken mouse and keyboard X drivers pushed through that update, as described in the other thread (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-823499-start-25.html)?

Not sure I follow you, I see no solutions in that thread...

Are you suggesting that my problem is the same as that one? Maybe you are right. There are about a dozen different threads about this topic lately, most fixed by updating the drivers.... My bad for missing that one...

That would suggest that either your xorg.conf (which seems incomplete) or
your fdi file is messed up.

It is important to be absolutely certain that the x11-drivers were emerged after xorg-server.
Check it like this:
Code:
emerge genlop && genlop -l --date last week | egrep 'xorg-server|x11-drivers'

That would suggest that either your xorg.conf (which seems incomplete) or
your fdi file is messed up.

Except that it does the same thing even without an xorg.conf, and I do have anything in my fdi directory. I have never needed anything, since there is nothing unusual plugged into this system (it is just a usb mouse, and ps2 keyboard with a us layout).

The same xorg.conf works on my 64 bit system, which is up to date as well as of yesterday... I do not think it is incomplete. I just removed all lines beginning with a "#" and removed any blank lines...

If you have any .fdi files in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ move them out - at least temporarily to see if that helps.

And add consolekit to the default runlevel and start it, if it isn't.

check out this link:

http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/hal/2009-February/013001.html

or in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

enter the following in the serverflags section:

Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"

Cheers
Shelton.

Once again, anything that involves '"AutoAddDevices" "false"' is just a hack.

I don't have anything in my fdi dir.

I have started consolekit...

Still the same problem, as soon as I touch the mouse, it locks up. The keyboard never works....

When running X without an xorg, using the "startx" command, I notice something unusual on the console:
Code:
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Error:            Can't find file "en" for symbols include
>                   Exiting
>                   Abandoning symbols file "default"
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
XIO:  fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0"
after 535 requests (535 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

The line: "Can't find file "en" for symbols include" seems particularly telling, but I don't know what to do about that... I have tried recompiling everything using only en_US, but that didn't seem to help... That spark any ideas?

I don't know but this stood out for me in the your X log

Quote:

(WW) AllowEmptyInput is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse' will be disabled.

I don't have that in my log(s).

I wonder if using a very simple Xorg.conf would help.

like

Code:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier     "Layout0"
    Screen      0  "Screen0"
#    InputDevice    "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
#    InputDevice    "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
#    Option        "AutoAddDevices" "False"
EndSection

Section "Files"
EndSection

Section "Module"
    Load           "dbe"
    Load           "extmod"
    Load           "type1"
    Load           "freetype"
    Load           "glx"
EndSection

#Section "InputDevice"
#    # generated from data in "/etc/conf.d/gpm"
#    Identifier     "Mouse0"
#    Driver         "mouse"
#    Option         "Protocol"
#    Option         "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
#    Option         "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
#    Option         "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
#EndSection

#Section "InputDevice"
#    # generated from default
#    Identifier     "Keyboard0"
#    Driver         "kbd"
#EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier     "Monitor0"
    VendorName     "Unknown"
    ModelName      "Unknown"
 HorizSync       30.0 - 110.0
    VertRefresh     50.0 - 150.0
    Option         "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Device0"
    Driver         "nvidia"
    VendorName     "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier     "Screen0"
    Device         "Device0"
    Monitor        "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth    24
    SubSection     "Display"
        Depth       24
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

I left the comments in there just to show what isn't being used. Btw this was setup up using nvidia-xconfig program. Also the refresh rates for your monitor are most likely different so check those out before trying this.

Hi Folks,

only for the records.

Yesterday also my X.Org was upgraded to X.Org X Server 1.7.6, when doing an upgrade of the whole system (x86_64). After this upgrade also my mouse (PS/2) and my keyboard were dead. A look into /var/log/Xorg.0.log showed the following:

Code:
(EE) module ABI major version (4) doesn't match the server's version (7)
(II) UnloadModule: "mouse"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/input/mouse_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "mouse" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
(II) LoadModule: "kbd"
(II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/input/kbd_drv.so
(II) Module kbd: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
        compiled for 1.6.5, module version = 1.4.0
        Module class: X.Org XInput Driver
ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 4.0
(EE) module ABI major version (4) doesn't match the server's version (7)
(II) UnloadModule: "kbd"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/input/kbd_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "kbd" (module requirement mismatch, 0)

So I did a

Code:
emerge -tav xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard

and after a restart of X all works well. Of course I performed a revdep-rebuild right after the initial upgrade.

But maybe it makes sense to do a

Code:
emerge -tav $(qlist -IC x11-drivers)

as suggested in https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-823499-start-25.html

cheers

Umm... I did that for S&G's (and it didn't help), but with evdev, you shouldn't need to do this...

Well, I can't say I understand it... but I went ahead to xorg-server-1.8, and now it works.

Maybe 1.7.6 was buggy, or maybe just updating all the dependencies to 1.8 took care of it, but it works...

Thanks to all who offered help.

See you next time ;)

Okay...

I backed the system down to 1.7.6 again, and had the same exact problems. I recompiled 1.8 (and its deps), and now I have a working mouse and keyboard again.

The problem is, however, that I have an older nvidia card on that machine, a geforce 4600 ti, which uses the 96 drivers. The current of which is 96.14, and the latest in portage is 96.16 -- neither of which is designed for use in xorg-server 1.8. So performing a "emerge -av1 $(qlist -I -C x11-drivers)" or even an "emerge nvidia-drivers" will force xorg-server back to 1.7.6 (which forces the system out of sync, because all the drivers and deps are for 1.8 ). What a mess...

So... now I have a working mouse and keyboard, but no compositing -- and as a bonus, I cannot logout of X without it hanging on a black screen (doesn't seem to hand the session back to kdm properly). I have to log in via ssh from another machine to kill it, or do a hard-shutdown.

So, it is likely that if you have a newer card, for which a driver exists in portage to run 1.8, then that is probably an adequate fix for you. If you are in my situation, it isn't. It must be a bug specific to my hardware. And now they have removed 1.7 from portage so I'm screwed... Guess I'll have to use the nv driver for now...

GungHo's suggestion did the trick for me:

Like I said, that doesn't work in this instance. It is a bug.

Hi there,

I've also had this problem, after upgrading to xorg 1.7.6.
I was about to try with 1.7.7, which I've seen in Portage... but while compiling I've realized that bobspencer123 has mentioned:

Code:
(WW) AllowEmptyInput is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse' will be disabled.

...so I've tried including this in the ServerLayout section:

Code:
     Option     "AllowEmptyInput"     "false"

...AND IT WORKS!!

I hope that it helps.
Cheers,
Jordi :-)
