Continuing from https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-829329.html, I've downgraded the kernel on my G5 to 2.6.32-r7 and solved some problems but one has re-appeared: the DVD device is no longer set up; that is, neither /dev/dvd nor /dev/cdrom exist. This is puzzling, as to get 2.6.32-r7 built, I copied the .config and ran make oldconfig. In particular, all the 'old' IDE options are off. Any ideas on how to get the DVD back ? .config at http://www.pastebin.org/325563.

if you are using the new pata drivers, for your dvd then you also need :
Code:

CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=y

CONFIG_PATA_MACIO=y

i must say i really prefer to compile a vanilla kernel by myself (as cruxppc does oblige to do).

Thanks for the reply but CONFIG_PATA_MACIO does not exist in the 2.6.32-r7 config.

I'm stuck. To play DVDs, I need DRM, which is not supported in 2.6.34 (see https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-829627-highlight-.html). However, DVDs are not seen under 2.6.32-r7. Hrmph !

Solved by moving to a 2.6.34 kernel. I was stuck on 2.6.32-r7 for other reasons, but those reasons have now been eliminated.
