Now we just need an ebuild that will use snapshots (http://downloads.zen-kernel.org/snapshots/zen-stable/diffs/).

I just grab a tarred gzipped/bzipped snapshot from either http://git.zen-kernel.org/zen/ or http://git.zen-kernel.org/zen-stable/
and untar it in /usr/src (and typically change the name from zen-whatever to linux-2.6.*-zen*)

No ebuild really needed.

can i ask for another addition to zen ?

http:/ /cruxppc.org/~acrux/pmu-led-2.6.37.patch
reference : https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-840062.html

this would make some ppc users really happy and is quite trivial to merge.

cheers

I'm zipping along happily on 2.5.37-zen0. Unless I hit filesystem bugs, or btrfs, xfs, reiser4, or other critical codes gets a big bump, I will not be updating anytime soon. I have not had responsiveness and throughput like this for about 6 months :D :D :D

Random Question: How can I make portage recognize my git-base zen sources as a valid kernel in order to have it stop wanting to install gentoo-sources? Do I have to make an ebuild?

Just unmerge gentoo-sources.

Sorry I wasn't clear. There are a couple packages I have that depend on having a kernel tree installed (nvidia-drives for example). Anyway to fake out portage to see the git clone of zen-sources without using a live ebuild so gentoo-sources doesn't keep getting reinstalled?

Surprisingly the Server is located in Mannheim :)
Code:

but as http://www.zen-kernel.org is not down this is kind of strange....

Does zen have the nice DRM backported from 2.6.38 for KMS r600g users to do color tiling?

latest zen 2.6.37 appears to lack the tuxonice patches

Is that a policy decision going forward?

as a temporary *fix* you could give my patch(set) a try (see me signature)

it includes several similar patches like the ones in zen & additional ones

Is it just me or has everyone else noticed how incredibly
snappy/responsive 2.6.37-zen is?

i've been using -zen for a while, so i can't tell. but i don't see huge difference when switching between this and fedora installation (on its stock kernel).

I've noted a few things with the .37 kernel family.

1. They sure aren't breaking any land speed records putting out new .37 sources. By "they", I mean not only kernel.org, but pretty much everyone else that would build their version on top.

2. There is some sort of instability that leads to segmentation faults appearing in /var/log/dmesg. I have found it in both 32 and 64 bit images. I have found it in vanilla and zen .37 flavors.

3. Even though it causes a segmentation fault in ndiswrapper (and a serious one, if you believe the feedback), ndiswrapper continues to work.

It always bodes badly for a source family when development releases of said family seems to stretch on into infinity as the new rc version moves way ahead. This is what I see with the .37 family. I won't be surprised if the .37 family falls flatter than the .33 and .34 families.

Cheers,
Pappy

Do I make something wrong, but when I download source here:

http://git.zen-kernel.org/zen-stable/snapshot/zen-stable-2.6.37.tar.bz2

and patch here:

http://downloads.zen-kernel.org/snapshots/zen-stable/diffs/v2.6.37-zen_master.diff.gz

then I apply patch (patch -p1 < v2.6.37-zen_master.diff) succesfully and compile,
but uname -a shows after Linux karu 2.6.36-zen2 #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT Wed Feb 16...

everything else runs fine (I can choose BFQ scheduler and etc. as zen kernel should).

Just bad tagging or do I miss something ?

I haven't really read the announcement about zen releases but if they plan to stop releasing tarballs we need to think of a way to handle this (ebuild wise)

Suspend and Shutdown are broken with 2.6.37 for me. Works fine with 2.6.36.

I confirm. Shutdown stops after remounting filesystems readonly.

afaik that's a regression with 2.6.37 for some boxes

I confirm: no shutdown. I've here a crappy Compaq 6715s notebook.
And it sometimes spits, after remounting fs read-only, something about disabling IRQ #16
