I installed Gentoo base system. Then, i installed KDE 4
When kde loads i get the welcome screen but my mouse and keyboard dont work.
I installed xorg and tried to configure it but it just crashed so i restarted and then kde log in screen came up and no keyboard works.
How can i get to the command prompt instead of going to KDE?
I have a system that i cant do anything with because i cant log in.
Also, what file do i need to edit for them to work?

Thank you

you'll want to remove (kdm|xdm|gdm) from the default runlevel in order to not be sent to a graphical login

if it will let you, try CTRL+ALT+F3
normally you can ALT+SysRq+K to kill off X even if CTRL+ALT+BKSP is disabled

In terms of why mouse and keyboard don't work, try

Code:

rc-update add hald default
rc-update add dbus default

suspect the input issues are a result of hald not being started; xorg 1.7 uses HAL, and in theory you shouldn't even need an xorg.conf (assuming you have evdev both in kernel, and the xf86-input-evdev portion pulled in)

Suggest boot cd and enter the change root:
Code:
rc-update del xdm
should allow you to boot to the CLI instead of KDE
Code:
grep -i evdev /etc/make.conf
if not present add INPUT_DEVICES="evdev" to /etc/make.conf
Code:
grep -i evdev /usr/src/linux/.config
if CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=y is not present recompile and reconfigure kernel to include
Quote:
Device Drivers --->
Input device support --->
<*> Event interface

If:
Code:
grep -i hal /etc/make.conf
does not produce
Quote:
USE="hal"
you need to edit make.conf to add hal to USE="
Then run:
Code:
emerge -uND dbus hal xorg-server $(qlist -IC x11-drivers) gentoolkit
rc-update add dbus default
rc-update add hald default
reboot

Code:
startx

hal needed for xorg-server < 1.8.0

If no luck:
go through the following in order and with care:

If using xorg-server-1.8 or newer

If using openrc and baselayout2:
