But when I run eselect news, there's nothing there. This is on three different machines, what's going on?

Should'nt you eselect news read ?
Or do you mean that you get something like "no news is good news" when asking for eselect news read ?

eselect foo list <--



eselect news list

eselect read all <-- should to the trick

My bad, this time "eselect news read" actually worked.

edit: Still doing it on one machine:

There's a pretty good explanation of this on the paludis-user mailing list: http://lists.pioto.org/pipermail/paludis-user/2009-December/001241.html

Also, I would recommend asking paludis questions on the paludis-user mailing list; the quality of support there is much higher(people actually use paludis, and are more knowledgeable in general).
