has anyone had any success emerging nvidia-drivers against one of the 2.6.36 rc (1,2,3) kernels?

Then the patch is wrong for this(your) version.

Try this (tested approach):
nvidia-drivers fails to emerge with kernel 2.6.36 or later
More elegant solution (didn't test yet):
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-256.53 fails to compile, because of unknown field ‘ioctl’ in kernel/nv.c
