Haven't found a bug about this on bugzilla yet (if it is a bug...?)

Running a fully up to stable date system with a few unstable apps, namely portage-9999 (09:53:17 10/19/10).

autounmask-0.27 creates entries in the /etc/portage/package.unmask using overlay specific keywords:

Code:
=x11-wm/compiz-fusion-0.8.6::gentoo ~x86

for the gentoo overlay. Replacing "gentoo" with the name of another overlay being used.

emerge gives warning messages on each run with these messages:

Code:
accepting version anyway
garbage (:) at end of version '2.3.0-r1:'
accepting version anyway
garbage (:) at end of version '2.3.0:'
accepting version anyway
garbage (:) at end of version '9999:'

Is autounmask simply adding erroneous text that isn't meant to be there or is the live version of portage not parsing it properly?

I guess, these messages come from an older version of eix. Upgrade to >=eix-0.22.3.

It shouldn't be so, normally. I suppose something is using some hooks of portage in your setup which in turn calls eix (or eix-update or something similar).
