Hello all

I want to add git.overlay.gentoo.org to layman ( via -o or config file),
however I cannot find exact link ( something ending with repositories.xml)

How it is supposed to work? (why don't they have a link on the first page)

Thanks,

Konstantin

layman -S will fetch the current repositories.xml, including the overlays hosted on git.overlays.gentoo.org.

Be aware that you need dev-vcs/git installed for layman to handle git overlays.

Actually I was trying to install gitolite
which is listed on
http://git.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/?=proj/planet-gentoo.git

proj/gitolite-gentoo.git
Fork of Gitolite for Gentoo...
Christian Ruppert...

and cannot find a way to do it

I suuposed I have to
layman -a proj
but this doesn't work.

Sorry, I am a newbie to gentoo

There is no overlay named "proj".
See the output of
Code:
# layman -L
which overlays can be installed via layman. You can use the overlay search engine to find out which overlay a particular package can be installed from.

layman -L was the first thing I have done after installation

I also supposed that the link I provided (git.overlays.gentoo.org ) contains valid information,

the link you provided points to another gitolite that I already found via google.
bye the way, what is 'overlay search engine' you mentioned?

chithanh, thank you,
I finally understand that I have to install ramereth overlay, and now I understand the difference between overlay and category of ebuild.

I see dev-vsc/gitolite now, but it is masked ( I will try to figure out how to handle it)

Two more question
1) how can I ask emerge to show in what overlay have it found the package
2) how can I ask layman/emerge to list packages in it.

Thanks again

Read http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=3&chap=3 how to install masked packages.
If you have eix installed, "eix packagename" will show you which overlay the package is in. "eix --in-overlay overlayname" list all packages which are in a particular overlay.
