I AM FURIOUS !!

Some very cleaver portage maintainer decided to throw out all octave-forge packages (containing toolboxes for octave) from the science overlay and replace it with a package management system called g-octave. At least that's how it looks.

The thins is that g-octave is complete rubbish. The unstable version 0.4.1 cannot sync the package list (very funny... I wonder what's it for then). When trying to sync it shows a message that sync is unsupported and to use it one must use the working version (9999). After unmasking (!) it... guess what... IT DOESN'T WORK EITHER !!

Who the hell replaced the octave-forge packages with this shit !! If it bothered someone they could have just made a separate overlay. Or at least check it the replacement software works.

I've realized this now on my newly installed system (the old one still had the packages). How am I supposed to work now !? It's The middle of the night here and I need octave to make a report by morning. I've already lost 2 hours trying to make that stupid piece of software work and now I have to download all the packages manually :[

PS And sorry for this rage, but as I said... I'm furious.

I suggest that you file a bug report. In the short term, you could put the old ebuilds into a local overlay.

Worse yet, Portage this morning told me that
Code:
!!! Ebuilds for the following packages are either all
!!! masked or don't exist:
sci-mathematics/octave

What the heck is going on here?

I've got a solution...

The error is in wget.. It reads the SSL certificate config incorrectly (it doesn't accept * as a wildcard).

To fix this, update to >=wget-1.12-r3.

It is masked as ~amd64 and is a system package so be careful.

Seriously , what is this crock doing portage? It seems to serve no purpose at all.

The worst thing of this is that is completely unmantained. There are a bunch of open bugs that nobody cares about, some packages are ancient (for example, the program tries to install control-1.0.11, while the most curren one is 2.1.55), image package doesn't work with libjpeg-turbo, etc.

I don't know how this thing works, but we can't upgrade the ebuilds ourselves anymore. Somebody should write in gentoo-science about this.

I wrote a blog post about this topic, to avoid being repetitive.

TL;DR: Please read the documentation.
