Hey there!

I'm going to install compiz-9999 but I'm not sure, whats the "best" overlay for it (Explanation of "best": Which ones contains the latest software releases / bug fixes / patches?) As far as I read, there are 2 overlays which contains live-ebuilds for compiz-9999. Firstly desktop-effects overlay and secondly tallica overlay.

So.. Which one is the "best" for live ebuilds? :)

Q2: - I didn't find tallica overlay with layman. Was it removed upstream?

Best wishes,

Loko 123

Ok, after choosing between the two overlays, I decided to use the desktop-effects overlay. However, Compiz-9999 doesn't compile. I have the same error, which is reported upstream. https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=357813

If anybody knows the solution or a possible workaround, please do not hesitate to contact me.

i recommend the version from portage.after it compile just hit compiz-manager and it should run like a charm :D

if it runs,you will loose your window frame.resize and move them. open a terminal and hit ccsm
mark window decoration,move and resize window

my desktop :!: :!: :!:

Thanks for your quick response,

So I'm stuck with the latest stable (Because I don't think that mixing git with stable software isn't that good)? Ok, no problem ;-). I've time and hope, that compiz++ is going to be released soon.

p.s. nice desktop!

I haven't tried compiz-0.9.2 on Gentoo, but on Slackware I had to downgrade cython from 0.14 to 0.13 to get the python packages from 0.9.2.1 to compile.

As a temporary solution, add this line to the /etc/sandbox.conf

Code:
SANDBOX_WRITE="/etc/compizconfig/"

The solution is simple. echo "x11-wm/compiz -gtk" >> /etc/portage/package.use.
After that it works like a charm. :)

As a temporary solution, add this line to the /etc/sandbox.conf

Code:
SANDBOX_WRITE="/etc/compizconfig/"

Thanks it has compiled fine! :) But adding this line is also a security leak, or am I wrong?

Yes it is, that's why I said it's a temporary solution, alternatively you can use
Code:
SANDBOX_PREDICT="/etc/compizconfig/"

which is safe, and see if this works.

While I couldn't compile gtk-window-decorator, I was able to compile unity-window-decorator. Unfortunately, compiz now crashes very frequently when opening new windows and is currently not ready for use in production.

Thanks, Loko123, this let me compile libcompizconfig!

P.S. and the whole compiz-fusion-9999 from desktop-effects overlay.

Community members & devs, could you please update the ebuilds in desktop-effects overlay? I´ve read some time ago, that it's possible to use Compiz++ (0.9.x) as a standalone WM. For more details see - https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=117885&p=12

I hope that this post will be read and an update of the ebuilds will be available soon.

Best wishes and greetings from Miami,

Loko123

P.S. Gentoo rocks!

Hey hedmo,

I don't know, if compiz-manager has been merged into compiz++ (0.9.x). But as far as I can see at the screenshot, Compiz++ works with emerald. So, maybe emerald has been ported to compiz++ :)

But theres still the problem, that compiz-9999 doesn't compile with the gtk USE-Flag in Gentoo. In Arch, it works like a charm, so I think that the problem lies with the ebuild.

I think that many devs/powerusers have the opinion, that compiz is just eyecandy, and a waste of resources.

For me, compiz is still more.;) It's the perfect WM with many plugins, and it's also customizable, to suit/fit/satisfy our needs. I love the compiz project, and I hope, that also Gentoo-Users could enjoy compiz++.

Compiz-9999 doesn't compile with gtk-use flag enabled (This bug has been reported almost 2 month ago - https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=357831) - So I'll have to compile it with kde use-flag. :) Let's hope that it works like a charm. I'll be back in ~20 minutes. :>

P.S. I hope, that any Developer / Community member is going to adopt the live ebuilds of compiz and fix the issue with gtk. :) Compiz is still a great WM! :-)

It won't start - It segfaults when I'm going to start compiz-fusion.

Bug has been reported directly to smspillaz. :) Lets hope, that Gentoo is going to get some support from smspillaz. This would be awesome! :)
