I'm looking for any information about compiz, documentation, links?

how to start it properly
how to get window decorations
how to configure it

I tried compiz.org, but there is only historic information, I'm trying 0.9.2. I can't find anything about getting anything useful started, after installing it.

The only thing that works at all is focussing windows, so that I can type.

I enabled window decorations in ccsm and restarted compiz and the decorator with --replace, still no decorations

I can't really remember all this, but do you emerald installed (for
the decorations)?

FWIW, the last time I tried this (in a brief fling with gnome) it seemed
to work OK

AFAIK Compiz 0.9.2 is not yet ported for emerald. So, you should use your default desktop wm instead.

Best wishes,

you get with

gtk-window-decorator --replace

and kde4-window-decorator --replace (or what its name is for kde)

provided of course you compiled it with gnome and/or kde support

I guess it's a bug, then.

I tried all 3 decorators, emerald with the patch found here in the forums.

The gtk decorator showed some signs of life, complaining about a "--theme broken" and silent about a theme that seems ok.

it's one post above this one
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6588109-highlight-emerald+patch.html#6588109

What I found out is: as of 0.9.2 (found in layman overlay desktop-effects), compiz-fusion must be emerged to get what you expect. compiz is only a "bare" windowmanager without even the famous cube. To get "real compiz-like" window decorations, also emerge emerald 0.8.4, but add the patch at the end of src_prepare().

Start compiz --replace to try the window manager and e.g. gtk-window-decorator (but this part didn't really work for me).

I found a compiz configurator in the Gnome menus (System-Preferences).

way back like 5 years ago when I actually used compiz/beryl, there was an icon that I used to start it and play with the settings. It will autostart compiz for you every time you enter you DE.

it still exists and is called fusion-icon now

don't know if it works with latest compiz (at least 9999 should)

I'm back to compiz 0.8* compiz 0.9* kept on segfaulting for me

this thing is really really really really really unstable :(
