Hello,
my gentoo box has been brought to its knees now ,
i am writing this from a secondary box, so i cant paste much at this time.

it all started when last night I upgraded to gentoo-sources-2.6.38
then i tried to install the ati-drivers (layman -a sabayon) against the new kernel.
i found that the libati*.so.1 files were put directly into the /usr dir
after attempts at repairing the system udev, python and emerge all broke,
and there were hundreds of lib files peppered everywhere in the /usr dir.

has anyone got any idea why lib files would be installing into the /usr dir directly instead of /usr/lib?

thanks in advance.

What ARCH are you running?

What does the output of "portageq LIBDIR_$ARCH" show?

same problem for me :(
and to make matters worse, after running "python-updater", there is no executable "emerge" command anymore.
under /usr/bin i only see a broken link:

Code:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 21. Mär 08:22 emerge -> ..//portage/bin/emerge

there is no directory named "bin" under /usr/portage
and thus no "portageq" either...
this is on ~amd64.

what's going on here?

i did a makeshift fix ,
by dumping my old portage tree altogether and downloading a new portage-latest.tar.bz2 and a stage3-amd64-latest.tar.bz2 snapshot.
I had to extract the portage/bin dir out of the stage3 tarball and symlink it to , as my old portage tools were linking differently, /usr/lib64/portage/bin/

i re-emerged udev from single user mode and i had to edit init.d/udev-mount for some reason which i didnt understand.
i seem to be back online, im just having problems now because eselect opengl set ati isnt doing anything.
i had to manually symlink libglx.so and libGL.so

Moved from Portage & Programming to Unsupported Software as overlay ebuilds are not officially supported.
