I have successfully used vmware workstation with gentoo x86_64 for over a few years.

I need to use these launch parameters in order resolve a mouse issue; I made a simple script and ./vmware.start to launch vmware workstation appropriately.
Code:

export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=yes && vmware

I believe a package update broke the ability to use the mouse fix, because I receive the following output:
Code:

Logging to /tmp/vmware-free/setup-10675.log

(vmware-modconfig:10675): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "mist",
/usr/share/themes/Clearlooks/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:76: error: unexpected identifier `colorize_scrollbar', expected character `}'
/opt/vmware/workstation/bin/vmware: line 31: 10675 Segmentation fault      "$BINDIR"/vmware-modconfig --appname="VMware Workstation" --icon="vmware-workstation"

Vmware does launch successfully if I do not use the script, but then I have a mouse issue. I have rebuilt vmware-workstation, gtk-engines, gtk+, and emul-linux-x86-gtklibs, and I searched for solutions via google with no luck. Can anyone help me?

Hello,

had the same problem today (although on i586) and found that the update of zlib from 1.2.3-r1 to (stable) version 1.2.5-r2 caused VMware Workstation to crash.

Seems the warning and the error in gtkrc are normal as I also get them with zlib-1.2.3-r1. However, Workstation starts fine without the segfault after going back to the previous stable version of zlib.

I opened a bug report.

Oliver

Thank you for the information, reverting back to zlib-1.2.3-r1 works.

Yeah, I just slammed into the same problem. I saw this older post: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-820554-start-0.html
and tried funklord's trick of moving the libxml2 directory in /opt/vmware/workstation/lib/vmware/lib to a backup location. vmware then started without the segfault. I'll add that note to the bug report.

BTW, this works because there seems to be an issue with certain versions of libxml2 and zlib, or so says google. Another fix might be to put the current zlib directory/library in the vmware lib directory, but I didn't try that.

Argghh. I hate VMWare. For some crazy reason VMWare has started crashing with the libxml2.so.2 directory removed in /opt/vmware/workstation/lib/vmware/lib. So I re-emerged VMWare, which put the directory back, and verified it still segfaulted at startup. I moved the directory into tmp, and then got:
Quote:

/opt/vmware/workstation/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-modconfig: error while loading shared libraries: libxml2.so.2: cannot read file data: Error 21

which I wasn't seeing a few days ago.

So I put the directory back and copied /usr/lib/libxml2.so.2 into it. Now VMWare starts up again. Arrgghh.
