Hi,

I am having difficulties with the GUI of the vmware workstation 7.1.3 and the new 7.1.4, where the GUI crashes on most interactions, such as bringing up the 'new vm' dialog, changing a selection in favorites, or trying to bring up properties dialog.

VMware needs some special versions of some special libraries in order to function. You MUST use the ebuild from the vmware overlay. Then add this to package.keywords:

Then emerge app-emulation/vmware-workstation

I ran into same problem afet emerge world about 2 weeks ago. Last was end of January with no GUI crashes afterwards.

Now i followed Aquous description with the overlay but this had no effect.

What information is needed to dig deeper in the problem? Any hints are welcome

Guys I see this is serious problem and I am not alone.

My system was fine and I decided to update my gentoo.
As a result vmware-workstation became dead.

Nothing helps. I tried almost everything.
Even downgrading vmware-modules to 1.0.0.25-r4 does not help.

Vmware modules work, network works, installs fine. But interface (vmware-workstation, vmware player too) does not start.

vmware-workstation worked before without external "overlays" just by standard ebuild

If you know how to install it using some "overlays" please explain how.

Okay.
I have found solution.
In despair I started to downgrade everything vmware depends on.

Adding

in /etc/portage/package.mask
and rebuilding these packages helps.

Did not apply for me, my versions are:

dev-cpp/glibmm-2.24.2-r1
dev-cpp/gtkmm-2.22.0
dev-libs/libsigc++-2.2.7

But this weekend i switched to x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.4.5 (from 4.3.4) and did a emerge -eav system / world.
Took 2 days but in the end, vmware gui does not crash anymore.

Which packes caused the failures i dont know.

In my case VMWare works ok now. But unfortunately the have dropped the oss sound-support in version 7. So I get an error that libasound couldn't be found. But that's a secondary problem. I don't need any sound support within VMWare.

I also have the "Caught signal 11" crash and I have noticed that there is a problem with the video driver. My workaround is now to use the xf86-video-vesa driver instead of the ati Xorg or fglrx vendor driver. Maybe this helps somebody here too!

I'm running 32Bit i686 with the latest X server and I'm using the VMware Player 3.1.

Check the contents of /tmp/vmware-{user}/appLoader-{pid}.log

/opt/vmware/bin/vmware was doing nothing (no errors reported). It turned out that I had removed the slotted libpng-1.2 package that libvmwarebase.so.0 depends on.

re-installed media-libs/libpng-1.2.45 and was good to go.

This may seem a bit off-topic, compared to the previous posts, but this is where I ended up when trying to find a solution. I thought that the `vmware` command was crashing because nothing happened and there was no error being outputted to the tty.
